Coming up for air – part thirteen

Coming up for air – part thirteen

Bette was getting ready to go to The Mandarette. It was Saturday and she was going to have dinner with the girls followed by clubbing at The Planet. She had promised Alice to stick around all night. Bette had agreed because she knew, she had neglected her friends for far too long, but also because she felt a little guilty over how rarely, she had visited The Planet after Kit turned it into a club. Bette put on her favorite low-cut jeans and a white Donna Karan top. Even though her clothes still didn’t fit her quite like it used to, she was looking better than she had in a long time. Bette wished than Tina was going with her tonight, but she was with Henry and Mikey. They had talked on the phone on Friday night. They talked for almost two hours about old times, their friends, work, and about Tina’s upcoming weekend with Henry. It was a good conversation, no meltdowns or backtracking, just good honest conversation – laced with a little flirting and laughter. Bette smiled as she recalled how she had made Tina laugh on more than one occasion. That sweet laughter was going to be the end of her.

Bette put on her boots and grabbed her cell, purse and jacket. She decided to send Tina a text message before she left. Just a little something about how she was thinking of her, and she was hoping that her talk with Mikey went off ok. Bette went out the door with butterflies in her stomach at the thought of the way things were turning out with Tina. She repeatedly told herself not to get too far ahead. Baby steps would have to do for now.

“Hey there… can a girl catch a ride?” Shane said, leaning up against The Saab.
“Sure… you can catch a ride with me anytime…” Bette grinned.
“Good to know…” Shane said, tongue in cheek.
Bette just chuckled at the sexual innuendo always underlining what came out of Shane’s mouth.
They both fell silent as Bette maneuvered the car through the traffic.
“Are you ok, Shane… you are so quiet?” Bette asked.
Shane shrugged and looked out the window.
    “Shane…?”
“I saw Tina last Wednesday… she was at The Planet….”
“I know she was. I believe Alice asked her to come…” Bette said, not sure where Shane was going with this.
“It was kind of weird seeing her again…”
    “Weird how…?”
    “I don’t know… I don’t think I was completely fair to her…”
“What happened, Shane…? I saw Tina on Thursday, she didn’t say anything about it to me.”
“It’s just… I think I treated her kind of cold… I’ve just gotten used to being mad at her for not working things out with you… and for shagging up with that guy, when she should have been talking to you instead… I shouldn’t have ignored her… I just feel bad about it, that’s all.”
“Maybe you should say this to Tina…”
    “I know… and I will… It’ just…”
“Shane… don’t apologize to me… I’m eternally grateful for all the support that you have given me… You were there for me when everyone else turned their backs. I’ll never forget that. I’m sure that Tina will forgive you, if you ignored her. She said she had a great time. Maybe she didn’t even notice?”
“No, she noticed… will she be at The Planet tonight?
    “No, she had other plans…”
    “Some other day then…”
Bette gave Shane an encouraging smile as she pulled up to the curb outside The Mandarette.

    1. I hope Tina is OK, but she doesn’t deserve to be in Mikey’s life. She’s not really a friend of the family nor his mother. Appreciate the time you had and let Mikey be loved by his parents and perhaps the next woman Henry does marry. Henry didn’t even owe her the time she just had, he’s not the bad guy here. He gave her options and she made her choice. Nice that Bette was there to pick up the pieces again even though she may not get what she really wants out of the relationship with Tina.

    2. that hendick is some piece of work… i do hope miky’s mom does call tina… i have a feeling she knows just how good tina has been to her son… so glad bette went to find her… and also taking her HOME… please continue

    3. definitly this was so difficult for Tina but Bette was there to help her. I am with Amanda maybe Mike’s mom let Tina will be near mikey because she care a lot about him and mikey love her too, The little boy don’t have to suffer the anger of her father. well done girl

    4. I hope Mikey’s Mother was glad to get rid of that ass hole. Maybe she will let Tina see Mikey when she has him. Thanks goodness Bette went looking for Tina. The options he gave her was horrible wrong. He just want that build in wife part time Mom and some one to take care of his needs. thanks

    5. Okay this chapter wasn’t what I hoped for, but it is your story and only you know where you are headed with it. Unfortunatley there are no winners in a situation like this because everyone is hurting. I feel sorry for Mikey the most because he was the only totally innocent one in all of this and he can’t understand what is happening. He just knows that he loves Tina and she loves him. I am so glad that Bette went and found Tina. She will be there for her no matter what because her love for Tina is unconditional. This was a very emotional chapter anker and I can’t wait to read your next one. Thanks

    6. What kind of man would use a child to try to get a woman to stay with him? That’s what he was doing…he let her stay and play and bond and tuck him in hoping at the end of the night she would stay out of love for the child. Shameful! I wouldn’t want someone who dosen’t want me.

    7. Henry is a complete a**!!!! That is just wrong of him to do that to Tina and Mikey. I dont see how he could hurt his son like that. Maybe he will change his mind after he sees Mikey hurting b/c Tina’s not there anymore. Hopefully Tina will be ok b/c now she has lost 2 sons. Very sad but a great update. Now bring on the mushy stuff. LOL PPS

    8. I can’t really understand how Tina bonded so closely to Mikey. But I guess it can happen. Tina needs to get her priorities straight w/Bette first. She can have a family w/Bette. Even on the show, I never understood why they didn’t try and work out their difficulties. Why Tina didn’t try. Yeah, Bette was wrong and I don’t condone it but Bette didn’t committ murder. But hell, it is difficult to tell a complex story in just twelve 50 minute episodes w/many characters. PPS.

    9. Azmama…it could have been done…they just took a really wrong direction…they could have worked on it instead of bringing in all those new characters…they could have worked on it instead of concentrating on the really weird life of Jenny…oh lord don’t get me started…

    10. WTF????happened to Tina there???? I can understand her upset but this seems a bit more than that…did Henry do something??? Poor Mikey, adults should be adults when kids are involved BUT easier said then done…Henry’s obviously a bit cuckoo with the photos and all in his bed!!!! He can’t force Tina to love him….great writing PPS

    11. I know how hard it is to walk away from something that you love with all of your heart. When a child is added to the mix it makes it that much harder to swallow the pain. Sometimes you wonder is it easier to walk away and never look back or to walk away but yet visit once in awhile. What Henry had planned was not going to help Mickey but it would help him. If he really cared about Mickey and Tina he would have allowed them some time during the week just for them. He also could have just said that it would be too hard on him and Mickey right now for her to be around. Maybe in time she could visit, but for Henry to do what he did it just shows what type of person he is. Thank god that Bette followed up on her desire to know if Tina was okay. Bette can hold her close to her heart and just be there for her.
