CHAPTER 23
It was one in the morning, and sitting at a small table in her room which also served as an improvised lab, Bette was bending over her microscope.
She raised her head and let out a deep sigh… No, it still wasn’t it.
She was close though, she could feel it. She looked at the white mouse fidgeting inside its small cage. Since the very beginning, the small animal had been the innocent victim of the numerous tests she’d been running, and the very fact that it was still alive was undeniable proof that she was slowly getting there. With a soft smile, Bette thought that in some ironic way, she and this mouse were in the same boat
Bette thought about Tim. She wished that her smart and loyal assistant was there with her. For the slightest moment, the idea of asking Tim to join her had crossed her mind. But she had immediately ruled it out. There was no way she would ever ask anyone else to risk their life for a cause that she had herself chosen… ‘Chosen’? Had she really? Was there even a choice when such a dreadful virus burst out somewhere?
No, she wouldn’t want anyone she cared about to put themselves in such a risky situation because of her. Tim had a girlfriend who would have worried about him and anxiously waited for his return. She had… What did she have?
"Bette… Promise me you’ll take good care of yourself.”
The beloved voice echoed in her head, as a reminder of the one thing she craved more than the air she breathed and that she would never have.
She forced the thought away and smiled as she recalled the moment she and Kit had recognized each other the day before. She still couldn’t get her head around the fact that in the wide range of possible countries Kit could have been sent to, she had ended up here in Santaragua. She was thrilled of course, but her surprise had been tremendous.
Once she had realized that it was really Kit who was standing before her, she had put the box on the floor and taken a few steps.

I am so hooked on this story! Bette’s admission just made me want to jump ahead to Tina’s arrival…just please don’t let Tina get sick – it would kill Bette! Please don’t torture us for too long – I can’t wait to read the next chapter!!!

WOW ! This Tina of yours ?! I like the sound of that !… This was a WONDERFUL chapter, K ! I mean it. Wonderful on every level… What is so heartwrenching, not to mention frustrating of course, is to see them hurting and struggling so much with their emotions when they actually both feel the exact same way about each other. In fact, no matter how far geographically they are from each other, it feels they’re so close with their heart and soul !… Oh, and Kit is a beautiful character as well… I love her ! Thank you, K ! You rock, as usual.

Helena is very atute to Tina feeling.so in her heart she has lost Tina to someone else. Kit was a a god sended to Bette. she now has someone to love her and take a wee bit ofcare fo her. Get Tina over there to do the rest. thanks
Thankfully the marriage between Helena and Tina seems to have come to an end. Now Tina is on her way to Bette. Poor Bette, falling apart with only Kit there to catch her. Soon though, Tina will be there with her Bette.
