    Cure-all, Chapter 22

    CHAPTER 22

    She was exhausted.

On her arrival in Santa Maria, the small capital of Santaragua, she had been welcomed by Pedro, a young Santaraguayan who had been fortunate enough to be granted a scholarship by the government and spend a few years in Paris as a trainee student at the Pasteur Institute. He had gone back to his country a few years ago and volunteered to guide Bette during her stay.

He had wanted to take her to the Intercontinental, the nicest hotel in town, but Bette had asked him to take her to this lazaretto he had told her about, where the people infected by the disease had been taken. Bette was very aware that a lazaretto was the kind of place where ill people were usually put in quarantine when a dangerous epidemic hit a region or a country… "An isolated case, huh?" she had said gritting her teeth.

Pedro had looked at her, stunned that such a dignified professor, well known in the scientific world, and a woman nonetheless, would not even take the time to refresh and rest after this long trip, and would want to go straight to the heart of the tragedy. Because it was a real tragedy that was waiting for her, one that would hit her hard.

But he had complied and had taken her outside of the small town, far enough to avoid risks of contagion.

Upon reaching their destination, Bette had discovered a beautiful church, monumental, in the desert valley of Rio Quinte. Two wings of ruined buildings surrounded the church which stood, proud and imperturbable, but also visibly affected by the catastrophy that was unfolding within its walls.

The place seemed totally abandoned, and the silence that filled the large esplanade was deafening. A smell of death had welcomed them as soon as they had stopped in front of the church, and Bette had immediately rushed inside.

Stepping through the door, she had frozen. She expected horror every time she stepped into the battlefield of a disease, but once again, it had exceeded her expectations.

People laid on dirty straw mattresses right on the floor. Men, women, and children, alive and dead… There were rats running around and the smell was unbearable. Plaintive moans, coughs, groans, voiceless cries had reached Bette from everywhere. Sounds of pure pain…

Bette had bent down over a small child and his imploring smile had violently shot through her core.
