Just when Tina thought she couldn’t get more annoyed, she had been taken aback by the insolent things Kelly had just said. She knew bits and pieces about her and what occurred between she and Bette when they co-owned the Gallery in New York. Tina wished now that she had asked Bette about the details of the lawsuit. They had thought it was best to leave what happened in New York behind them. They wanted to start fresh in their reconciliation working on communicating better as opposed to sorting through the details of the many mistakes they had made during that time. Tina knew telling Bette about Kelly’s obviously malicious and deliberate appearance would need careful handling. As she continued to listen to Kelly talk about Bette, Tina’s anger became more visible. Her instinct was to defend Bette and she struggled to not say something that she would regret later. She exhaled through gritted teeth. ”You know, Kelly,” in a low deliberate voice she continued, ”I’m curious, is there a reason for all of this?” She said circling her index finger between them. ”Your crazy accusations and lies are well known when it comes to Bette.” Tina continued to collect herself but kept her expression neutral, ”I mean.. when are you going to stop being jealous of Bette and the life she has carved out for herself.”
Kelly let out a chuckle and smiled in amusement showing no qualms about the harsh and embellished things she had just said about Bette. ”Well… I am sure we will never agree on Bette’s character… And… I’m sure you’re right. You’re not the first to believe what I say is not true. But… you know… there has always been a semblance of truth in what I say.” Kelly cocked her head to the side slightly as she studied Tina.
The verbally sparring women were interrupted by a sudden bang as the door to the professor’s office flew open, followed by the professor charging into the room. ”I found them.” She exclaimed, as she moved aside revealing a dolly with five large boxes. They were put way in the back. I had to get a student to help me put them on the dolly.” She forced a smile as she look back and forth between the two women. The tension was high and all three women could feel it. ”I hope you have a strong driver.” She said as she tried to conceal her uneasiness.
Tina pulled her attention from Kelly and focused on the professor. She blinked and took a second to find her voice. She was thankful that this little tete-a-tete with Kelly Wentworth was over. ”Yes, and I am ready to go.” She forced a smile as she turned back to Kelly and glared. ”It’s been an interesting conversation. I would like to say I enjoyed it, but we both know otherwise.” Their eyes met for the span of a heartbeat, no more. But that was enough.
Kelly remained standing for a few seconds. She then rolled her eyes and sat down in a chair that was in front of her. Kelly followed Tina with her eyes as she headed out the door. The professor watched Tina walk out the door and then looked at Kelly sitting in the chair her eyes searching but finding no answer to what had happened between the two women.
