Detention // A Short Story – Chapter 2
“So…” Shane said, drumming her fingers on the table. “I guess we’re stuck with each other for eight hours now.”
“They just can’t be serious,” Carmen sighed. “Are we actually supposed to be thinking for eight freaking hours?”
“I guess,” Bette shrugged. “They just want to bore us. You know, so that we’d do anything not to get detention again. They think they’re smart.”
“Well, we’ll have to do something,” Alice piped in. “I want to die a romantic/dramatic/heroic death, I don’t want to die of boredom.”
“Well, what are you guys here for?” Dana asked. “What crime did you commit to deserve the terrible punishment of detention?”
Everyone was silent, looking at one another. Finally, Shane sighed and leaned back against her chair.
“Alright, I’ll start. I got caught smoking in the girl’s bathroom by Ms. Lerner. She’s such a hypocrite – I mean, everyone saw her with the pot at Taylor’s party. She’s a teacher, she’s not even supposed to attend parties thrown by studies. I hate her guts.”
“Me too,” Bette agreed. “She always tries to hit on me. As if I’m interested in that woman.”
“Maybe you guys can start the I Hate Jodie club?” Alice suggested. “I’d join you – I don’t like the way she looks at us when we have to run in gym. When we have to do anything in gym.”
“Wow, Alice, I didn’t know you actually lift your ass in gym,” Dana gasped in fake surprise.
“Yeah – really nice view, I tell ya,” Alice grinned. “By the way, Bette, she seems to look at you the most. She’s such a perv.”
“I bet she’d fuck anything that walks and happens to be female,” Shane said. “She’s such a hoe.”
“Hodie Lerner,” Bette nodded. “Fits her.”
“So, what are you here for?” Shane asked Bette. They all looked at the brunette.
“I told Mr. Pickering to go fuck himself.”
Everyone gasped. “Are you crazy?” Carmen asked what everyone was wondering. “Why on earth did he do that?”
“He was talking bullshit about how the heterosexual lifestyle was the only right one and how we should all stay away from everyone that doesn’t follow it. So I said he was a filthy bigot and a bitch. He got all mad with me and said that girls like me shouldn’t be in normal schools. So I told him to go fuck himself,” Bette shrugged.
“Wow,” Tina said breathlessly, speaking for the first time since she arrived. “I’m surprised you didn’t get suspended.”
“My dad and he have some… unspoken business. Let’s say he owes my dad one. A big one.”
“Handy for you,” Dana said. “I mean – that was so… wow.”
“Well, it was nothing, really. Why are you here, Dana?”
