    Epilogue

“Perhaps I should come back at 11:30.” He said, deciding that he could stay in area. There was a coffee shop nearby where he could pass the time reading the newspaper; an activity he rarely had time for.

Sensing that Melvin had little patience for when things didn’t go his way Mrs. Wilson came up with an alternative. She knew Elizabeth would be heart-broken if her father left, and for whatever reason changed his mind about coming back.

“That would be fine, but if you’d like I can take you to the library. Ms. Jenkins doesn’t mind having visitors during story-time. In fact, she encourages it and most times will drag parents into the activity.”

“Are you sure I won’t be interrupting?” Melvin asked half-heartedly hoping she would say yes. Reading stories to Elizabeth had been one of Melvin’s favorite pastimes. Even when she was in the womb he would read to Maxine’s pregnant belly.

“I’m sure Mr. Porter. Come on. I think they are reading ‘Animal Strike at the Zoo’. Are you familiar with it?” Mrs. Wilson asked as she led the way to the adjacent building where they housed an impressive library and separate sitting area.

At five years old the kindergarteners still enjoyed being read to, but also venturing into reading books on their own as they learned new words.

“Is it anything like ‘Monkey’s go on Strike’? That’s Elizabeth’s favorite, right along with ‘Aardvark Makes Pasta’.”

“Oh my. Those were my children’s favorites too. I must ask the Librarian if we have them. I believe the ‘Animals Strike at the Zoo’ may be quite similar but involves more than just the monkeys.”

“Oh, that should be interesting. Elizabeth and I can discuss her thoughts over lunch.

Perhaps we’ll add it to her collection at home.” Melvin answered with enthusiasm.

He was the type of parent that didn’t miss any teaching opportunity to give his daughters a chance to develop their minds. Just reading a book wasn’t enough. There had to be comprehension and a lesson to garner from it. He credited this habit that he’d instilled in his older daughter Katy for her sharp mind and deductive skills.

Unfortunately, he had divorced Elizabeth’s mother when she was three, and though he had visitations he seldom made time, and admittedly he held some resentment, so he didn’t engage the child much after that.

    1. Beautiful Story….wonderful epilogue. So many children…. Love the names. I love your characterization of Melvin. It is always pleasing when a story is presented where a parent who was so hostile toward their gay child have a change in attitude and actually create a loving relationship with their child and their family. The fact that your story actually gives Melvin an extended years of life and happiness is a wonderful story line.

During this time, there is so much pain and anguish about from just normal living. A positive joyful story is always welcomed.

Now, you have a couple of stories which you have made a great progress in. I look forward to seeing those completed as well. Love your writing. Publish when you can.
