Eternal Flames—Chapter 11
Tina’s smile widened a fraction. “Sure. I’d love that” she says when they announced Carson and Emma
“Let’s go” Bette says as she and Tina weaved through the crowd, her phone already in hand and recording as Carson stood behind his table with Emma beside him. A papier-mâché volcano, painted in reds and oranges, stood proudly in the center. Tiny plastic dinosaurs surrounded it, their plastic faces frozen mid-roar.
Tina positioned herself to one side, making sure she had a good view. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted Bette—next to her angled slightly toward the display. The profile of her face was calm, focused, her phone held up steadily. But it was her expression that caught Tina: the small, soft smile that curled her lips and the unmistakable glint of admiration in her eyes.
It tugged hard at Tina’s heart. Bette wasn’t just filming—she was present, invested, proud.
Carson cleared his throat, standing a little taller. “So, um… volcanoes erupt when pressure builds up inside. And the lava—” he gestured dramatically toward the top “—is made of molten rock, crystals, and gases. When it comes out, it’s really hot—like, a thousand degrees hot!”
Emma nodded eagerly beside him, adding, “And sometimes ash comes out too, which can go really far and cover everything!”
Carson grinned, encouraged by her input. “Yeah! And our volcano works because we used baking soda and vinegar to make it fizz, which is kind of like how the gases push the lava out in real life.”
As the fizzing demonstration began, both Tina and Bette leaned in unconsciously, capturing every detail on their phones. The fake lava bubbled and ran down the volcano’s sides, flowing past the dinosaurs and the king of dinosaurs the T. Rex in slow, foamy streams.
When it was done, the small crowd around them clapped. Tina stopped recording and looked over to find Bette already lowering her phone, a faint but genuine smile still on her face.
“He did so good,” Bette said quietly, glancing at Tina. “And he didn’t even ask me to help him with any of that.”
Tina smiled knowingly. “Oh, trust me, he wanted to call you. But I told him you’d be even prouder if he did it himself. That was enough for him—he was determined.”

Small steps indeed, glad Bette asked Tina to have coffee with her.
Marissa seems to be the perfect therapist for Bette and i like the friendship between Rachel & Tina.
Thank you for the update!
Small steps are still steps. Love the slow approach to them renewing their relationship. Being hurt is an anchor on your life not easily removed. Bette is getting there and Tina is willing to wait. Thanks for posting!
Thank you for the new chapter. I love this story it’s different from others with Tina having a son. Bette is so taken with Carson I think she will finally start showing Tina more affection. Hope you post again soon.
I’m so happy you posted this. I want more and more and more. . . This story line is creative and reflects the core of Bette and Tina personalities in a new story line. I love it and need more. Thanks
Hi jjos23
Is there any chance you might continue with this story? It’s so well written and I’m longing to see Bette let Tina back into her heart. I love your descriptive writing and the way you’ve constructed this alt universe is very engrossing.
Please pretty please another chapter???
Thanks anyway for what you’ve written so far.
Largo
I agree with Largo. Please more and more! You have created a new version of their relationship and their challenges.
Your writing/story is really wonderful!
Again, thanks
Just here to agree with Largo and Annie! :)
Done with the re-read. Wonderful story! The slow pace works really well for them. After all they’re not alone in this now – they have to consider Carson in all their decisions. Though it feels like the status of “best friends” might be possible in the very near future.
I really, really hope that you find the time and enough creative energy to continue your story. Keep my fingers crossed and hoping for the next chapter.
Hello jjos23, I remember reading this when you first started writing it. I have enjoyed it both times. If you are still out there and are so inclined, I would love for it to be continued to a lovely ending.
