    Eternal Flames—Chapter 11

    Bette’s eyes softened as Carson came around the table, beaming. She bent slightly and held out her arms. “You did good, buddy.” She hugged him tightly. “I’m so proud of you.”

    Tina felt the words land in her own chest. She kept her composure, though, watching as Carson’s grin widened at the praise. “Thanks, Bette,” he said, his voice almost shy.

    In that moment, Tina didn’t just see a woman admiring a child’s project. She saw the care, the connection, and the quiet love Bette carried—even if she didn’t always know how to show it. And it made her want, more than ever, to be patient.

    ~~~~~~~
    The coffee shop was only a few blocks away, a small, warm space where the air smelled of espresso and cinnamon. Soft light spilled over dark wood tables, and the low murmur of conversation blended with the hiss of the espresso machine.
    They found a table tucked into a corner, half-hidden by a tall potted plant.
    Tina noticed the way Bette’s foot tapped beneath the table, the faint crease between her brows. “If you want to do this another time, we can,” she said gently.
    Bette looked up, meeting her gaze, and forced herself to still. “No. I’m okay.”
    Tina gave her a small smile. “Do you want to share a cheesecake? Like we used to?”
    Bette’s lips curved. “Your grandmother’s strawberry cheesecake? The one she swore I should eat alone because I was too skinny?”
    Tina laughed, and Bette felt the sound warm something inside her. “I told her it was more fun sharing—watching you look like you were making love to it.”
    Tina’s jaw dropped. “Bette! You didn’t—”
    “I did,” Bette admitted with a grin. “She asked how I knew. I said TV. She said that’s all that’s on these days—filth—and stormed off.”
    The laughter came easily then, loosening something between them.
    When the cheesecake arrived—thick, creamy, topped with glistening strawberries—they fell into an old rhythm of passing the fork back and forth, trading small bites and quiet smiles.
    Tina asked about Bette’s law practice  and Bette found herself talking about her cases, the long hours, the corporate mediations that kept her calendar full. She asked about Tina’s work at Presbyterian, and Tina spoke with a light in her eyes about rare diagnoses, trauma recoveries, and the satisfaction of helping people heal.
    Comments
    1. Small steps indeed, glad Bette asked Tina to have coffee with her.
      Marissa seems to be the perfect therapist for Bette and i like the friendship between Rachel & Tina.
      Thank you for the update!
    2. Small steps are still steps. Love the slow approach to them renewing their relationship. Being hurt is an anchor on your life not easily removed. Bette is getting there and Tina is willing to wait. Thanks for posting!
    3. Thank you for the new chapter. I love this story it’s different from others with Tina having a son. Bette is so taken with Carson I think she will finally start showing Tina more affection. Hope you post again soon.
    4. I’m so happy you posted this. I want more and more and more. . . This story line is creative and reflects the core of Bette and Tina personalities in a new story line. I love it and need more. Thanks
    5. Hi jjos23
      Is there any chance you might continue with this story? It’s so well written and I’m longing to see Bette let Tina back into her heart. I love your descriptive writing and the way you’ve constructed this alt universe is very engrossing.
      Please pretty please another chapter???
      Thanks anyway for what you’ve written so far.
      Largo
    6. I agree with Largo. Please more and more! You have created a new version of their relationship and their challenges.
      Your writing/story is really wonderful!
      Again, thanks
    7. Done with the re-read. Wonderful story! The slow pace works really well for them. After all they’re not alone in this now – they have to consider Carson in all their decisions. Though it feels like the status of “best friends” might be possible in the very near future.
      I really, really hope that you find the time and enough creative energy to continue your story. Keep my fingers crossed and hoping for the next chapter.
    8. Hello jjos23, I remember reading this when you first started writing it. I have enjoyed it both times. If you are still out there and are so inclined, I would love for it to be continued to a lovely ending.
