    Eternal Flames—Chapter 9

    *Three weeks later*

Rachel had become Tina’s lifeline in ways she hadn’t expected. Their coffee dates had turned into regular walks through Central Park while the kids were at school and her shifts at the hospital allowed it.  Their conversations that ranged from the mundane challenges of single parenting to deeper discussions about healing from the past.

“You’re glowing today,” Rachel observed as they settled onto a bench near the reservoir. “Good shift at the hospital?”

“Actually, I got a text from Bette this morning. She wants to take Carson to the planetarium on Saturday. It’s been hard following at her pace but every little step she takes gives me that much more hope”

“She’s initiating contact now. That’s progress.  And it seems she is keeping up communication with you and Carson regularly”

Tina nodded smiled, pulling out her phone to show Rachel the message.

Carson mentioned wanting to see the planetarium. Are you both free Saturday afternoon? I could pick you up around 2.

“She offered to pick us up,” Tina said. “That feels like a big step.”

“It is huge step Tina. She’s not just agreeing to spend time with Carson anymore – she’s actively planning it.”

“I know for Carson..But when it comes to me she still has me at arms length.  And I understand it…But…”

“But you’re hopeful,” Rachel finished gently. “There’s nothing wrong with that, Tina. From what you’ve told me, and from what I saw at the museum, she cares about you. She’s just scared.”

“I keep thinking about what you said that first day – about how she kept checking on me. I’ve been watching for that when we’re together, and you’re right. She does.”

“Have you told Carson about your history with her?”

“Yes….Except the fact we were secretly in love with each other then.  He knows we were best friends before. I’m sure he senses something more is there and it’s enduring because he isn’t judging.  He actually wants us to be a family and I have never pushed that on him.  Like it wouldn’t bother him if his Mom would date another woman.  He loves Bette and took to her so quickly.  And after he found out about his Dad he just completely shut him out.  He doesn’t even mention Darren anymore.  Bette is like the most important person to him”

    1. Step by step, day for day Bette is letting Tina in. It’s lovely to read how Carson loves Bette and Bette loves him as well, so patient and with so much care.

Be patient Tina, don’t rush, you can see that giving Bette time and respecting her boundaries is doing, an invitation for lunch just the two of you, spending time at Bette’s home.

Well written story, i enjoy it very much!

    2. I love this fic, Tina and Bette are doing as well as can be expected. I hope Bette stays the course no matter how afraid she is of history repeating itself. Rachel seems nice, so I hope she doesn’t turn out to be a sheep in wolf’s clothing. I just read all 9 chapters today, and am looking forward to the next one.
