    Finale – Poetic Justice

They hold tightly until their breathing gets back to normal. They kiss tenderly this time then finish up in the shower. Bette puts on the terry cloth robe and combs out her hair again while Tina sits at the vanity wrapped in a large towel blow drying hers and putting on light make-up.
Tina turns off the blow dryer just in time for Bette to hear her cell phone ringing before it went to voicemail. She was on the phone when Tina entered the bedroom to finish getting dressed. It was obvious from Bette’s end of the conversation that it was a business call. She inquired when Bette hung up.

“That was my service. Apparently a female prisoner at L.A. County was attacked last night. She’s cut up pretty badly in the face and upper body area. She’s stable but in critical condition. They need me to do a consultation and evaluation.”

“Do you know what happened?” Tina asked.

“I don’t have many details … just that there was an altercation between three female prisoners in the communal showers. The woman that was attacked was cut with a prison shank. She’d nearly bled out on the shower floor where her attackers left her unconscious. Fortunately one of the guards missed her during lock down and went looking, otherwise she would be dead.”

“Does she need surgery?” Being this was the first time Bette had been called to duty since they’d lived together Tina was curious about her work.

“I’m sure she will eventually but I wouldn’t be able to do anything surgical for her until the cuts heal. I can only try to assess the extent of the injuries then make recommendations for treatment so we have a better chance at successful reconstructive and cosmetic surgeries later on. There are some things we can do early on similar to the Aboriginal remedies that Dave Wells used on you that will help the healing process.”

“I didn’t realize prisoners had the benefit of plastic surgery. I just assumed when they got in fights they would just live with the scars.”

“Reconstructive and cosmetic surgeries on prisoners who suffer considerable damage from injuries is one of the charitable endeavors at the L.A. Hospital. We do it on Tahaa at the Porter Clinic and the Queensland hospital participates in the prison program as well. I’m filling in for one of the doctors on rotation here who wasn’t available so I agreed to help out. What do you have planned for today?”
