    Forged in Fire: Chapter 16

The framily was mostly seated by the time Bette and Tina joined the group in the hotel’s restaurant. They had a long table by a window and as the couple walked up, a smiling waitress took their drink orders. Tina ordered coffee and juice for both of them. She was leading the way, holding on to Bette’s right hand.

Dylan’s brown eyes lit up when he saw them. He patted to the chair beside him and Tina made her way to him, pulling her girlfriend along with her. Tina hugged her nephew and sat down at the table. Bette sat beside her, an empty chair at her side. Despite her doubts that he would show up, Melvin was there as well. He was sitting at the head of the table, a previously read and folded newspaper in front of him. Thankfully Alice and Patricia were sitting on either side of him with Tasha, Kit and Max sandwiched in the middle on either side of the table.

Max smiled at them. “Good Morning guys!” he said, with a kind wave.

They replied in kind and a wave of good morning greetings went around the group. Now that Bette and Tina had joined them, the family members began making their way over to the full breakfast buffet. As Bette prepared to stand, her mother appeared, wearing a worn, shy smile.

    “Hello, Sweetheart,” she said.

Tina looked between the women and studied her lover, trying to determine if Bette needed rescuing. When the gallery owner gave her girlfriend a soft smile and a nod, Tina knew that she was alright and left the mother and daughter alone. Dylan was waiting for her anyway. He’d wanted to make sure they both got omelets and French toast to compare against the Saturday morning meals they’d made together at home.

Janice sat down beside her only child and ordered a black coffee as the waitress came by, dropping off glasses of water and steaming mugs of caffeine.

“You still take it black,” said Bette.

    Janice nodded. “I do.”

“I remember that. I drink mine the same way.”

Bette looked frowned into her mother’s eyes. “I don’t understand you. How could leave me with him?”

She didn’t want them to but her eyes teared and her chest hurt. She didn’t want to jump into such a heavy topic, but her tongue had a mind all its own.

    1. Very nice. Sorry her mom was sick is why she left but wouldn’t Mervin have known this. And him telling Bette this might have eased her pain maybe where she at least knew it wasnt because of her. Maybe he was to embarrased to let anyone know his wife had issues or embarrass he didnt stay with her through it.
Anyways sounds like he is softening a bit but clumsy at it
Thank you for your post this morning. Hope your day is relaxing.

    2. The Melvin of this morning and the Melvin of last night are two different people. Does he realize how upsetting he was to chastise Bette like that? Does he realize how wrong he was?

Janice? Okay, so she was sick. Could she not have made contact with Bette and tell her she was sick and unable to take care of Bette at the time or even later as she started to recover? Even if she couldn’t live with Melvin, she still could have tried to maintain some kind of relationship with Bette. An occasional phone call or a letter – something? And with no explanation from dear ole Melvin, Surely he knew what happened to Janice.

Tina’s thought that her role is to be Bette’s protector as her sole purpose is troubling. Relationships are so much more – that is not her only role in Bette’s life. And Bette will be so much more to her than that.

I look forward to more of this story. The family dynamics is really intriguing. I am in hopes that they will work toward a more normalized relationship. Thanks for this update…

    3. Interesting. But i still think that whatever was happened that with Bette mother it’s still not excuse to left your child like that. Left and not ever contacted with her.

    4. Thanks for posting!
Good for Bette that she decided to let Janice explain. Though a few words during framily breakfast, which still seems to be part of saying goodbye to Sidney, can only be the opener for another meeting. Maybe Janice will come to LA for a visit at the gallery and spend some time with Bette and Tina.

I see why Tina might think that she’s there to protect Bette. Everything happend so fast between T + B. They hadn’t much time to just be in love, get to know each other, be equal partners in a new relationship. Early on Tina slipped into the role of Bette’s protector after Sidney’s assault, protect her from her addictions and to go to any lenght to shield her from her father/family.
Deep down she’s probably still afraid that Bette will leave her because her father. So she’s maintaining the role of the protector to prove her worth, to be good enough for Bette. They both need some time for themselves, to really talk, to open up to each other. Thanks to Kit hopefully Tina will think about it.

I’m ready for more, MTS :-)
