Ghosts of the Six-Year Void
Bette laughs, a soft, rich sound, and sets her glass down with deliberate care. “So… ‘six-year void,’ is that our term now?”
“Well, I certainly felt as if I were floating aimlessly in the abyss during that time….” Tina gently says.
Bette considers that for a moment. “That’s probably the most accurate description I’ve ever heard, actually…”
At that moment, the speaker shifts key, and Whitney Houston’s opening chords of “Didn’t We Almost Have It All” unfurl into the night air. The melody unfolds like silk.
Tina closes her eyes, a wistful smile curving her lips as her head dips forward. “For the first few months, every day after work I would come home and blast this song and just cry myself to sleep…” She chuckles, distant and rueful. “It sounds depressing, but in a way, it made me feel a little better, just thinking of you, our memories… it was the only thing that held me together…I guess you can say this was my emotional support song.” She then closes her eyes. “I just love this song, it’s so haunting and beautifully heartbreaking….”
Bette’s own eyes shine with tears. She reaches out, gentle fingers finding Tina’s hand. “Come here, baby….”
With a small, shy smile, Tina rises, crosses the few feet between them, and straddles Bette’s lap. They share a loving kiss and rest their foreheads against each other.
Bette moves Tina’s hair from her face. “That was a rough time for both of us, baby.” She then smiles brightly. “But look at us now…having a back and forth about the size of pools in the backyards of a very nice house that’s staying on our list…”
Tina chuckles and wags her finger. “The house was amazing, but that pool was too damn big….”
Bette rolls her eyes. “It was fine, T…”
“It was not…it took up more than half the yard…” Tina says.
Bette laughs and shakes her head. “You’re exaggerating, baby….”
Tina tosses her arms around Bette’s neck. “Am not…GiGi agreed with me….”
Bette playfully narrows her eyes as she studies Tina.
”What are you doing?” Tina asks, her fingers absently tracing the collar of Bette’s shirt.

Gigi!? Nice twist. And I didn’t expect that annoying Dena to get another job with Tina.
Thanks for posting :-)
Very happy to read a new chapter!
Love how you put Gigi in the story. It was besides Bette and Tina, the gang and Nathalie one of the characters i liked.
Both of them are very possessive of each other, love the term “six-year void”
Michelle, still dumb and arrogant to think Bette will talk to her after all the shit she put her through. I didn’t feel sorry for her at all.
Hummm, what twist are you planning for Lara? Great chapter as always, thank you for posting.
Loved seeing a new chapter! Also love the plot twist using GiGi.
More, please!
Agree with other comments that bringing Gigi/Natalie back to the edges of the main characters was a great idea..
I’ve missed my fix on the best characters. And really love that stories are still being written here 20+ years since they were introduced to us!
Thanks everyone!!!!
