    Just one little touch could have changed so much.

     

    ‘I have to get out of here for a while!’

     

    She picked up her keys, opened the door and started toward the car.

     

    ‘Bette?’

     

    ‘T, you startled me, what are you doing sitting out here?’

     

    ‘I wanted to talk to you.’

     

    Bette noticed the courier’s envelope in Tina’s lap.

     

    ‘You have the papers already?  That was quick.’

     

    ‘They were just delivered.  When the guy saw me out here he left them with me.’

     

    ‘I’m surprised he let you sign for them.’

     

    ‘I told him that I’m your wife.’

     

    ‘Well, let me sign them and you’ll be free of that burden.’

     

    Bette reached for the envelope but Tina didn’t let go.

     

    ‘Can we talk first?’

     

    ‘Why don’t we go inside?’

     

    ‘Have a seat, would you like anything to drink?’

     

    ‘I’m fine.’

     

    ‘Did you want to talk about the settlement?’

     

    Bette reached for the envelope and again Tina held on to it.

     

    ‘T, it’s all right, I have to see the settlement sooner or later.  Whatever you decided is fine; I’m not going to get upset.  Oh wait, the house, are you moving back in?  I can go to Kit’s.  I can come back later for my clothes.’

     

    ‘Is that what you think, I would expect you to leave your home on a moments notice with just your clothes?’

     

    ‘It hasn’t been a home since you left.  I fully expected you to keep the house.  You’ll need the room, with the baby.  I should have left this afternoon, I’m sorry; I just didn’t think it would happen so fast.  Just give me a minute to get a few things.’

     

    ‘Can you just sit down so we can talk, please?’

     

    Bette sat down across from Tina and waited.

     

    ‘I don’t want to talk about the settlement.’

     

    ‘All right, what then?’ 

     

    ‘I didn’t want you to find out that way I wanted to tell you Why did you just walk away today?  It isn’t like you to give up so easy Bette.’

     

    ‘I don’t want this to turn into a fight but I went to that meeting today thinking we were separated and trying to work out a temporary support agreement.  Then, all those things your attorney said and you didn’t answer when I asked if you still love me and then I realized you’re having our baby and you didn’t even tell me.  I didn’t look at it as giving up more like giving in.  I’m just trying to give you what you want.  I’m sorry, for so much, but most of all I’m sorry I hurt you enough to make you stop loving me and to make you feel you couldn’t share the news of our child with me.  And now, I’ve made you cry again, so why not just let me sign the papers for you and’

    2. Woohoo! I get to leave the first comment! I better hurry up and post. That was so great!! I love your take on Bette; her resignation is so out of character it actually works. This is very intriguing…indeed, “What happens now?” Please keep going, your dialogue and tempo are excellent. :)
