‘Pasta?’
‘No garlic.’
Tina walked out by the pool while Bette phoned in their order. She thought of how much she had missed spending time out here with Bette and with their friends and wondered if anything would ever be the same again. She felt Bette walk up behind her.
‘I think you should move back in and I’ll find another place to live. That way you can get yourself settled and get the nursery set up. It will be easier for me to make other arrangements.’
‘Where would you go?’
‘Apartment I guess. I’d like to find something close, so I can see you and in case you need me.’
‘I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but you could stay here. There are two bedrooms.’
‘Are you sure? I could stay in the office so you could go ahead with the nursery.’
‘You can’t sleep on a sofa’
‘I don’t mind.’
‘What if we take the sofa out and put a bed in there.’
‘All right, I’ve taken the next few days off, we could go ahead and get things set up.’
‘You don’t have to agree to everything I say Bette.’
‘I want to be here with you in whatever way you will let me. I spent the afternoon remembering our life here, thinking there was no way I’d ever get another chance with you, another chance to have our family. Now I’m sitting here waiting to share a meal with you, talking about sharing this house again. I’m going to have a daughter and a chance to show you I can be there for you this time around. And maybe, just maybe, we’ll find our way back to each other.’
‘The food should be here soon, I’ll go set the table.’
‘You sit and relax, I can do that.’
Bette was thankful for the break. She couldn’t believe Tina had suggested they share the house. She wasn’t sure at this point that Tina would ever forgive her, but at least she would get to be close by during the pregnancy and would get to be a part of her daughter’s life.
