Heart-Shaped Box, Ch. 31
Kit threw open the door. Ivan, what are you doing here?
Ivan stood before her, a huge bunch of flowers and a teddy bear in his hands. I couldnt let my best friend go through something like this alone, could I? he replied simply.
Oh, Ivan, come in. You shouldnt have, Kit exclaimed, taking the flowers and stuffed bears as she ushered him in. She couldnt help feeling touched as she breathed in the flowers sweet scent and absently stroked the bears soft fur.
Kit, Im so sorry, Ivan said softly, taking her hand. He opened his arms, and Kit silently stepped into him for a hug.
I cant believe you came all this way for little old me, Kit marveled, her words muffled in Ivans neck.
Youre worth it, Ivan told her, caressing her back gently.
Kit broke away from the embrace, surprised at her reluctance to leave the safe shelter of Ivans arms. She took a seat on the bed and gestured for him to do the same as she filled him in on the strange events of earlier at the funeral home. She suddenly felt herself yawning broadly and her eyelids drooping.
Ivan noticed and went to stand. Youre tired. I should go and let you get some rest. You need it.
Without thinking, Kit laid a hand on his arm, stopping him from getting up. No, stay with me, please.
Ivan looked unsure.
Theres no reason for you to leave. And theres no need for you to either go waste money on a hotel room or go hurrying all the way back to L.A. when I know you must be tired yourself.
At this, Ivan had to catch himself as a small yawn started to slip out. Kit saw it and grinned. Ivan smiled back and put his arm around her in a friendly manner. Together, they leaned back against the pillows, Kit snuggled under Ivans arm and her face buried in his shoulder as they floated off towards sleep together. Kit realized, just before sleep overtook her, that shed never felt so safe or loved before in her life.
