    Held in Contempt Chapters 5-7

She dialled Tina’s number and almost immediately got an answer.

”It’s a good thing I’m second chair on this case,” Tina answered after noting the caller ID. ”I’m exhausted.”

”But no less capable of carving up the competition I’m sure,” Bette replied. ”Where do you source your coffee? It was decadent.”

”I’ll take you there sometime,” Tina replied. ”Fair trade organic by the way.”

”Well, thank you for the unexpected delivery,” Bette said. ”It was a welcome surprise.”

”Thanks for last night,” Tina said. ”It was exactly what I needed.”

Bette relished how Tina’s voice changed with her last sentence as well as how she placed her emphasis.

”Anytime,” Bette grinned. ”Listen, I won’t keep you. I know you have a short enough lunch break as it is.”

They ended the conversation by confirming plans for the next evening. There were mutual assurances that they were still headed in the right direction, even after having taken a welcome – albeit unscheduled – detour.

”Anything I can do to help?” Bette asked as she set the bottle of wine on the table.

Tina went back to slicing strawberries for dessert as she stood at the kitchen island.

Bette couldn’t explain her aversion to any physical contact with Tina this evening, but even a kiss of greeting didn’t feel as though it would be appropriate.

”Corkscrew is in that drawer,” Tina nodded towards the counter by the sink. ”If you’d like to pour us some.”

”What kept you busy today?” Bette asked.

”Groceries this morning,” Tina replied. ”And I spent the afternoon gardening. You?”

”I worked at home all day,” Bette replied.

”The prison of billable hours,” Tina said. ”See? There are advantages to my position.”

Bette brought a glass of wine over and set it beside Tina.

”Thanks,” Tina set the paring knife down and wiped the moisture from her hands on her apron before turning towards where Bette was standing. ”Dinner won’t be too long.”

”Whatever it is smells good,” Bette said.

”Do you find this awkward?” Tina asked.

    ”Maybe a little.”

”Where’s the woman who propositioned me in a hotel lounge the other night?”

”I’m not really that bold in real life,” Bette replied, taking a sip of her wine.

”This is real life?” Tina asked.

    1. So pleased to see another post.

The authenticity of the Legal Scenes is of no consequence as the Courts in the UK and the US are not the same..

I look forward to reading any of your stories and as usual completely into this one and looking forward to the next post.

Thanks jks please keep them coming.

    2. Hi jks:

I love this story, I’ve read the one you told me amicus curiae, and it has some similarity at the beginning and I love it, but this is different, and I like this, also, very much, so clear and professional, I will be waiting for your update.

      Thanks

    3. I agree with pmulvey, don’t understand why you got tons of grief before.

I really enjoy this story and and the way their relationship develop. Bette gives Tina the space and time she needs. Love the way you portray her.

Looking forward to the next chapter!
