    Held in Contempt

"My record speaks for itself," Tina replied, rolling her eyes. "The D.A.’s office decides what to prosecute and I do my best to make the case with the evidence that’s been gathered. Who I come up against is immaterial to me."
"Sounded like you were interested in coming up against me a few minutes ago," Bette countered.
Tina’s eyes widened and she was left uncharacteristically silent at the retort.
Bette could hardly believe she said it herself, and felt Tina’s silence presented as good an opportunity as any to make her exit. She couldn’t help but have a grudging respect for someone who was so willing to put everything on the line for every case.
Tina Kennard was a formidable adversary. Bette looked forward to putting another notch in her win column after proving her case. The guilt or innocence of her client notwithstanding, she had a job to do. And Tina was merely an inconvenience that she had to manage along the way to doing it.

"She infuriates me!" Tina replied into the phone. "She’s arrogant, completely without a moral compass, and has scant respect for the law itself!"
"But she’s hot," Alice sighed. "She gets away with so much because everyone’s so distracted by her charm."
"She knows how far she can push each and every judge," Tina sighed. "You’re lucky you’re not a lawyer. Sometimes it’s so not about the law."
"Sounds like you were the one pushing the envelope today," Alice said. "You made a thinly veiled sexual retort in front of a judge?"
"I don’t know what I was thinking," Tina shook her head. "The worst part is, Bette totally called me on it."
"I thought that was the best part," Alice said. "If you’re going to debate with the likes of her, you’re going to have to get yourself a better script."
"Are you suggesting I can’t beat her?"
"I’m suggesting you get some real duds for cases when she happens to be your opponent," Alice said. "It’s not a judgement on you; it’s the decision making process your office follows in selecting worthy cases."
"You think I should try to cut a deal."

    1. Great beginning. Really like this and for them both to acknowledge an affection towards the othter at this early date really says a lot about each of them. Fantastic.
