    Held in Contempt

    "Don’t let it happen again."
They offered some final words of assurance that future interventions would not be necessary before making their way back to the court room.
"Does it seem as though we just got threatened with detention?" Bette asked as they entered the empty room.
"Kind of has that feel to it," Tina agreed. She walked to retrieve her rain coat and umbrella. All pertinent documents, as well as her briefcase, were in the possession of her co-counsel.
"I could have won this case," Bette said, slipping on her coat.
    "He was guilty," Tina said.
"Who did you piss off that you end up fighting the worst cases?"
"We all get our turns at the questionable verdicts," Tina said. She wasn’t about to drag the dirty laundry of office politics out for Bette to examine.
"The prosecutor’s office can be a real old boys’ club," Bette said. "It’s different in defense. You can be a lot more choosy."
"Said the spider to the fly," Tina said.
    Bette laughed.
"I was just about to ask if you wanted to join me for lunch," Bette said. "And I promise I’ll let you go home after only one…maybe two martinis. Come on Tina. Loosen up. I saw a glimpse of it yesterday. It was fun."
"I’m working on the public dime," Tina said. "Always another case to prosecute."
"Then how about dinner?" Bette asked.
"Dinner? You mean tonight?" Tina asked. Fuck, was she making a date with Bette Porter?
"If you give me your address, I’ll pick you up at seven," Bette said. "What area are you in?"
"West Hollywood," Tina replied. This was really happening.
"That’s convenient," Bette replied. "Me too. Seven’s good for you?"
"It’s fine," Tina replied. "Where would you like to go?"
"My treat, my surprise," Bette smiled. "But jeans are fine if you’re wondering about dress code."
Tina scrawled her address on a card she had in the pocket of her coat and passed it to Bette. Couple of colleagues going out for a meal. They had things in common. That’s all this was.
"Since I let your client off with such a light sentence today, a dinner is the least you can do for me."
"Maybe I’ll think of something else I can do for you by the time our date is nearing its conclusion," Bette said. She took a side step and headed up the aisle of the courtroom. She offered one last comment before reaching to grasp the ornate handle of the oak door that led to the hallway. "And I like that I just made you blush."
Tina held her hand to her cheek. Betrayed by a sudden rush of blood to the head.
And yes, undeniably, she had just made a date. With Bette Porter.

    1. Great beginning. Really like this and for them both to acknowledge an affection towards the othter at this early date really says a lot about each of them. Fantastic.
