    Her Guardian – Chapter 19

Tina fights back her tears as Bette holds her.

“Whatever it is, it’ll be ok,” Bette assures her.

    I pray you’re right.

They enjoy dinner and clean up the kitchen together.  Then Tina pours herself a glass of wine.  “Want one?”

“No thanks babe.  Work tomorrow, remember?”

“How could I forget?” Tina answers with a little sarcasm in her voice.

    “Ok T.  What’s going on?”

“Bette, have you thought about transferring to a desk job?”

“No.  Why would I want to do that?  I love my job.”

“Yeah, but just think you would work normal hours and normal days.  We’d have so much more time together.”

“Tina, what’s really going on here?”

“Bette, I’m worried sick about you.”  Tina starts to cry.  “After you got hurt, all I can think about is next time you might not be so lucky.”

“Tina, I’ve been doing this for ten years.  I’ve been injured a few times, but nothing very serious.”

“I know.  But what about next time?  It just takes once.  What about us?”

“Tina, I don’t know what to say.  I love my job.  You know that.  That’s why we’re together, that’s how we met.”

“I know.  But I have been going crazy thinking about it.  I feel like I want to crawl out of my own skin.”

“Babe, I’m careful.  That’s why we train.  Besides I’ve always got Shane there to watch my back.”

Tina’s crying gets worse.  “I’m not sure I can live with the constant worry.”

Bette is left speechless.  It takes her a minute to recover.  “What are you saying?”

“Bette, I don’t think I can stand watching you walk out the door every morning, knowing that it might be the day you don’t come home.”  Tina is sobbing now.

Bette wants to go to her, to comfort her, but she can’t.

“T, I love you with all that I am.”  Bette is crying now.  “But until you decide what you can and can’t live with, I don’t think we should see each other.”

Bette gets up to leave.  She leans down and kisses Tina on the top of her head.  Then she walks out the front door.

In the car, Bette sends a text to Dana.

Tina needs you right now. –Swimmer1

Dana and Shane are just leaving a restaurant from dinner when she gets the text.  “What the hell?”

They head straight to Tina’s apartment and find her on the floor in the living room, sobbing.  They both run to her.

    “Tina, what’s wrong?” Dana asks.

    “Where’s Bette?” Shane wonders.

“She left,” is all Tina gets out between sobs.

“You stay here with Tina.  I’m going to find Bette.”  Shane leaves and goes searching for Bette.

Bette drives around for a while, crying her eyes out.  She can’t believe what just happened.  This morning everything in my life was beautiful.  Now, it’s not worth anything.  Bette ends up at her sister’s house.  She doesn’t want to go home.  She doesn’t want to talk to anyone.  She knows Kit will give her space.

Dana stays up with Tina most of the night.  Tina finally calms down enough to tell her what happened.  Dana finally talks Tina into trying to sleep a few hours.  They climb into Tina’s bed.  Tina breaks down again, when she realizes that this is the first night in over a week that she has gone to bed without Bette.

Bette lays down to sleep at Kit’s.  She knows she needs to, she has to work tomorrow.  She looks at her phone and sees all the missed calls and texts from Shane.  “Not tonight.”  She turns the phone off.

Shane has been driving around for two hours, looking for Bette.  Dana had texted her, telling her what had happened.  She went to all Bette’s favorite spots.  She was starting to fear that Bette had done something really stupid, like found another woman to go home with.  As a last thought, she drove by Kit’s house.  When she saw Bette’s jeep in the driveway, she knew she would be ok.  As ok as she can be right now.

Shane texted Dana that Bette was at her sister’s, but she wasn’t going to bother her tonight.  She would talk to her at work tomorrow.

    1. In todays real world you might kiss your love one good=bye and not see them again. Police,Fireman,a drive on the road, postal worker, clerk in a store. or soldier. f your Gf—BF husband-wife. Has a job that they love but dangeries,Them they try to change there career, Then the drama starts, I hope that everyone before they leave for work or just leaves the house.tells their love that they do love them. thanks

    2. Tina was a little harsh on Bette. I’m sure she’s very scared, but they need to talk it over. Bette can only change for herself and not just because Tina can’t handle it. Love this story! Thanks for posting!

    3. I so just caught up. I saw that comming. Tina needs to really think about what she said and did to Bette. Bette’s job is a big part of her life and Tina knows this. Thank you Great Chapter!!! PPS

    4. Wow that was so real! While Tina has a point about the job being dangerous and it could be the last time she sees her walk out the door, the same is true in everyday life, you just don’t know if it could be the last time you see someone you love, that’s why you need to cherish the time you do have together! Hopefully Bette can make her see that, or Dana or Shane or Kit…the list can go on if need be, just let them get through it! I mean every relationship has drama, plus it makes for a good story too! PPS I can’t get enough:)

    5. oke didn’t see that coming! is this how it goes in the film? hmm bad film.. please let them be together again! i totally see tina’s point, but it’s bette’s favorite sport, work and a huge part of her life! i know they are gonna make it just fine, right?? thanks for posting again :)

    6. Great update – it would not be a good story without some drama. It is hard to be with someone with a high risk job – but when you love someone you have to decide what you will and will not accept – and what someone does for a living is part of them. I can’t wait to see how they work this out! PPS – great story by the way – way better than the movie!

    7. I know that Tina is worried about Bette but if she really loves her she is going to have get ahold of this thing. This is the job that Bette was ment to do and Tina needs to realise that no matter what job a person has there is a potential to suffer harm (though Bette’s job may have a higher risk) so being afraid for her is normal but she cant let it rule thier relationship or she may lose Bette. PS

    8. That’s bordering on emotional blackmail.I understand Tina fears, but I don’t believe they are justify. It doesn’t matter the job, there is always a certain amount of risk that come with it:just crossing the road is taking a risk. The most one can do is prepared for the worst, hope for the best, and love and appreciate the ones you hold dear to you every second you get. Please let them talk!….uh,did Tina ever get back her bikini?

    9. Very interesting. Fear and anxiety can make you lose your mind and your very last nerve. You can’t change anyone to what you want them to be or what you want them to do. Everyone is an individual and must do what is best for themselves. PPS
