How the WeHo West Was Won – Chapter 8

    Previously

Bette busied herself with work as did Tina and Tina relied on Alice’s friendship to get her through the first difficult weeks of being apart, not feeling badly about it because she figured Bette would have Kit. Then the intriguing, raven haired, beauty Helena Peabody came to town and she took an interest in the fair-haired schoolteacher. Bette expressed her distrust and displeasure at Tina’s new friendship and it enraged Bette that Tina wrote her advice off as being motivated by jealousy and not based on her years of experience as Sheriff. After six months had passed both of these women were hoping they could get to a point where they could at least be friends again. They had always been friends and they each found themselves still missing having the other as part of her life.

Sunday finally came around and you could tell by the look on his face that the Rt. Reverend Fairbanks was pleased by the turnout. Mrs. and Miss. Peabody were in attendance in the front pew and many of the usual suspects were in their proper places. Mr. and Mrs. Pennington who ran the general store and their three uninteresting daughters; Henrich Schmidt, his wife Helga and their pudgy sons who with their faces scrubbed pink resembled piglets, not surprisingly he was the butcher; the Blacksmith, Douglas Coleman and his sister Sarah; Gustav Zimmerman the Pharmacist; Guiseppi “Joe” Ciabattino, the cobbler, his son, daughter and wife Giovanna; and Horace and Mildred James, the Innkeepers, were all in their Sunday best. Tina and Alice sat behind Dana, Howie and Mrs. Fairbanks and Alice risked a verbal whip lashing in order to whisper a few choice words in Dana’s ear and pass her a note. Joe Wischnia and Bert Gruber, the barristers and their families sat in separate pews. Sitting next to Alice were Mark (who had failed to win Alice’s heart years ago but remained in Weho hoping for his big break), James, Tim and his fianc Jenny. Ivan sat in the back with Bette and David and admired his wife as she led the choir. Some of the more unusual suspects in the small church were Shane, Marina, Francesca, Carmen, some musicians and the grain salesman and friend of Ivan’s Dax. Everyone invited knew the Sheriff’s rule if you wanted to attended Sunday supper at the Porter/Ayecock household you had to attend services only Indians and those who belonged to other faiths were allowed to skip church.
