How the WeHo West Was Won – Chapter 9
Previously
Tina felt a tug at her sleeve and Alice’s voice in her ear brought her out her reverie. “Kennard, get up, it’s hymn time, are you okay?” “Oh, sorry, I just drifted off someplace, thanks Al.” Alice couldn’t help adding “I hope it was someplace good.” “You have no idea.” Tina replied not letting Alice get the last word.
Not long after arriving at the Sheriff’s place everyone had settled in and was eating roasted pig, glazed carrots, boiled potatoes, cornbread and ginger cake, pie, apple cobbler, drinking Ivan’s home brewed ale and whisky. The musicians played and a few people danced the atmosphere was lively and gay.
Bette saw Peggy with a mug of ale in her hand chatting with Alice, Dana and Helena. Bette walked up and greeted everyone with a genuine smile.
“Mrs. Peabody if you prefer I have a few bottles of excellent French wine.”
“French wine here?” Replied Helena with disbelief.
“It’s lovely of you to offer Bette, but when I’m in Rome, I prefer to do as the Romans, and besides this really is rather refreshing.” Helena threw an exasperated look at Peggy.
“Mother really you are an incorrigible embarrassment sometimes. How can you drink beer?” Helena was drinking cold tea she preferred to keep up appearances in front of her mother and the Sheriff.
“My brother-in-law brews it himself. It’s the best in the territory.”
“How delightful. How about I return your hospitality next week. You can bring your excellent French wine and I’ll have my chef Lara whip up something worthy to accompany it.”
Bette graciously accepted Peggy’s offer and moved on to chat with her other guests when Kit appeared by her side.
“Baby sis, do you mind my asking what the devil has gotten into you? Why is Helena Peabody and her Momma having supper at our house?”
“Kit, have you ever heard the expression keep your friends close and your enemies closer?”
“I guess so.”
“Well, that’s what I’m up to, besides I like the Mother she’s a hoot.”
“Just be careful because all mothers protect their young and I have a feeling her claws are mighty sharp.”
Bette walked around in search of Tina under the guise of talking to her other guests but she was nowhere to found. Bette was puzzled, could she have left early and walked back on her own, maybe being at the homestead was too much for after all. Ivan left his conversation with Dax about the quality of the grain Dax was selling, casually walked up to the Sheriff and whispered in her ear “she’s in the stable.” Bette patted Ivan on the shoulder “Thanks Ivan.”
Bette walked into the stable and saw Tina petting White Star’s nose, quietly talking to her and feeding her an apple. It was welcome sight to Bette’s eyes she stayed motionless for a few minutes but Night Wind had other ideas in mind and started saying his hellos.
Tina looked up and saw Bette standing there and asked, “How long have you been standing there?”
A week, a month, a year, “Just a minute,” Bette replied.
“I hope you don’t mind, I just wanted to say hello White Star.”
Bette moved across the stable so she was standing close to Tina and gave the horse a few friendly pats hello. “Tina, of course I don’t mind, I told you she misses you, I wish you would take her, she belongs to you and doesn’t like it when anyone else rides her.” Tina could tell Bette was being sincere.
“I can’t Bette and I can’t keep a horse.” Bette wondered why Tina was continuing to be so stubborn. “Well then why don’t you come out and ride her whenever you wish, she needs the exercise and would be happy to see you around the place.”
Tina nodded her head “I think I’d like that Bette.” Bette gave Tina her genuine 1,000 star smile.
“Good, I’ll leave you to your visit, unless you want to ride her now.”
“I can’t go riding in this dress.”
“T, I have riding clothes you can borrow, we could go out for a ride together, if you’d like.”
“Bette you have a yard full of guests and if we go off riding together in front of them the tongue wagging will never stop.”
“I forgot we had guests.” Bette fell back into “we” without realizing it and Tina let it slide.
“Maybe another time,” said Tina.
“Sure.” Bette gave Tina a hopeful smile and walked out into the sunlight but Bette was walking away from the warmth she was lonely for.

The tension is killing me!!!! Hope they “talk” on their ride…..how long has Tina been gone again???? I hope she han’t been gone for long cause White Star needs her exercise!!!!!!
Would they be back together when they’re grey? Bette could be more ‘active’. I know the ball is in Tina’s court, but she should let Tina know how much she want her back.
Howdy Pardner…why don’t I get out my six shooter and shoot myself. Damn..then tension between these two..I can feel it. So, now I have to leave the Wild West and back to reality and a ski trip to Michigan..I may not need the six shooter…could just run into a damn tree. Thank you for your wonderful words and the way you use them. see ya Monday night.
yes, please, do what you can to bring B&T back together…at least they are talking and hopefully we’ll see them riding together to the sunlight
Damn! And here I was hoping we were being set up for a roll in the hay. lol Oh well at least they’re talking and being friendly. I guess they need to go back to crawling before they can run again at full speed.
Yes, I concur with Lamentamini. What’s the point of having them in a barn if you won’t take advantage of the hayloft? I mean the meadow has to smell prettier, no matter how much you might like ol’ White Star. Even with guests one might exercise the quickie option, even if the horse gets no exercise. I guess we’re all still a little worked up after the last chapter.
Great chapter i am enjoying your story very much!!!
your killng me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! make the post longer
I am really looking forward to Bette and Tina getting back together, properly, such a lovely difference for a story.
God I feel like I’ve just visited Gunsmoke, it’s so real the rhythm you’ve got going here. Awesome I can feel the tension between Bette and Tina who will crack first. Thanks madcapper
The schoolmarm’s seeming a bit tempted by the comely sheriff. But I have a feeling that a monkeywrench will be joining the little dinner party before the day is through.
Every time I read one of your chapters I’m taken aback by how beautiful your storytelling is. Everything is described so well – it’s vibrant and alive. I love this story so much! Can’t wait for the updates!
