Hunting for Love
It was a quiet night in New York as the stars grew anxious to appear with some light. The sky was calm as was the air – no wind, only a slow and methodical breeze to chill the day’s warmth. The city seemed to move slower than its usual self; the people, too.
Bette Porter was slumped over her desk, busy with her work, when a timid knock echoed in her office at the university. She furrowed her brows at the interruption, as everyone else had gone home and half the place was dark. She thought that maybe she’d just imagined it. Then she heard the knocking again, but somehow it was even quieter the second time around.
Was it a custodian? But then, she’d already had her carpet vacuumed earlier that evening. With her pen still in-hand, she called out from her seat: “It’s open.”
An assured entrance gave way to a young woman who appeared to be much like any of Bette’s art students, but Bette didn’t recognize her. With brown hair that sat just past her shoulders and blue eyes, the woman could have looked very much like anyone else, but there was something different about her. The hair was thick but damaged, with long, winding curls that suited the masculine curve of the woman’s jaw – the roundness of her face. Even the bangs were different, cascading in a way so changed from modern fashion that Bette wondered how the girl had come across the look. And those eyes, Bette thought, staring forward as the girl gently closed the door behind her. There was something ignited in her eyes, or perhaps drowning.
“Umm … hi,” she finally said with her hands clasped before her, feeling Bette’s instantly curious gaze.
“Do you … have the right office?” Bette asked, getting to her feet to look more closely at the young woman’s position. She’d had other women come on to her in the dead of night, and she didn’t wish for a re-enactment. “I’m-”
“Bette! … Bette Porter,” the young woman corrected, nodding in a way so introverted that Bette found it suited her smaller frame. She was feminine and fit. Still, Bette felt a familiarity that made her smile in return, out of frustration. “Yes … I know who you are.”

A story from you is a fitting gift on V-Day or any day. What a treat to wake up to my emails telling me a favorite author has posted. The FANFIC FAVES feature is awesome!
A couple of thoughts given that you have identified it as a thriller. I don’t know if there will be a supernatural element, but my first thought was the “Tina” is a doppelganger, perhaps from an alternative universe. But if there is no supernatural intended, I thought she’s one of those deranged “fans’ that stalk the person they are obsessed with. But then your description of the “Tina” – “The hair was thick but damaged, with long, winding curls that suited the masculine curve of the woman’s jaw – the roundness of her face.” She sounds a little wild…maybe not human?
Okay, just some thoughts and I’m happy to read along and be thrilled by your thriller.
Thanks, GR!

I am so happy that I found the site again. The site was greatly missed even if it was only a few days. Great job Jacky et al with the transfer. It’ll take a little bit to learn the navigation but then it will be awesome.
