    Hunting for Love

    “And you are …?”

“Oh!” the young woman smiled back, looking to the ground as she spoke. “I’m Tina.”

Bette blinked and laughed for a single beat. “My wife’s name is Tina … that’s …”

But the young woman was finally finding the courage to lock eyes with her. And at last, their eyes were set on one another’s. “I just wanted to … I mean, I-”

“Are you aware of what time it is?” Bette asked in a voice cancelled of accusations. She was simply reminding the girl of the situation, and how it might appear.

“Mrs. Porter … I just had to come down here, and … tell you what an inspiration you are to me.”
Bette watched as the mysterious woman spoke quietly to her, with thick lips trembling nervously. They were pursed one moment, and then relaxing the next.

For a moment, Bette leaned onto her desk with fatigue, but then she straightened up when she saw the affection that appeared to her in the young woman’s eyes. “Look … this is endearing. It is. But it’s just late, and-”

“Oh, please!” Tina gasped momentarily, holding out her hands. “Just listen to me.”

Bette raised one hand to her hip at the young woman’s tone, but since it was not one of her students, she didn’t find it to be her place to admonish the girl. This had better be good, she smiled. So she stood and listened, as the girl had pleaded for her to do.

“I just … I see so much in you, and … it’s beautiful. You’re …” But she stopped herself. With her hands then clasped behind her back, she continued. “I think you’re wonderful, Mrs. Porter. I’ve read your book, and I must say that … well, your work has … changed me.”

Bette was flattered, and as much as logic would allow, her ego enjoyed the attention. She tried not to grin at the compliments that were pouring over her, because she always tried at modesty. Being as accomplished as she was, it was a try. Somehow, Bette merely croaked out: “Thank you – that’s very kind.”

“I just always told myself I would make it down here … to tell you all of that in person. And … that I feel … well …”

    1. A story from you is a fitting gift on V-Day or any day. What a treat to wake up to my emails telling me a favorite author has posted. The FANFIC FAVES feature is awesome!

A couple of thoughts given that you have identified it as a thriller. I don’t know if there will be a supernatural element, but my first thought was the “Tina” is a doppelganger, perhaps from an alternative universe. But if there is no supernatural intended, I thought she’s one of those deranged “fans’ that stalk the person they are obsessed with. But then your description of the “Tina” – “The hair was thick but damaged, with long, winding curls that suited the masculine curve of the woman’s jaw – the roundness of her face.” She sounds a little wild…maybe not human?

Okay, just some thoughts and I’m happy to read along and be thrilled by your thriller.

      Thanks, GR!

    2. I am so happy that I found the site again. The site was greatly missed even if it was only a few days. Great job Jacky et al with the transfer. It’ll take a little bit to learn the navigation but then it will be awesome.
