    I Fall Behind pt.12

    Previously:

“Okay. Have a good day at work!” Tina watched Bette
closely. It’s now or never.  “Are we still on for tonight?”

Bette’s thoughts were flying a mile a minute. What
did Tina mean? Am I the woman she was talking about? Am I the woman who
“captivated and enthralled” her? WHAT? I can’t handle this. No no
    no…. Oh God… I’m dying… I’m plummeting to a sure death impaled on
stakes like in one of those adventure-thrillers in the movies…

Tina’s endless caring eyes caught her.

Bette took a deep breath and released it slowly. She
looked around. She saw her friends pretending to be otherwise occupied.
She saw Kit rubbing at a stubborn stain on the counter. She saw people
at the other tables having their cups of coffee, plates of bagels,
    croissants, sandwiches, etc.

Tina’s endless caring eyes caught her and put her to right.

“Yes, Tina… I believe we’re still on for tonight.”

Tina released the breath she was holding and smiled widely. After a beat, Bette smiled back.

What was it that I saw? Bette wondered as she stared
at the polished wood of her tabletop. She imagined Tina’s face, her
smile, but most of all, her eyes. What do you see when you look at me?
She questioned Tina’s image. Do you see me, Bette Porter? Or do you see
that woman who had filled you with magic and wondering so long ago? Do
you know who I am? Do you know how I am… fractured inside… splintered into pieces? Can you see me? Can you know me?

No one can know you, Bette. An ugly voice crept into
her mind and whispered like tar seeping in. No one can see you. You’re
invisible, so hidden so deep inside. No one would want to see you, find
you. You’re not worth knowing. Who do you think you are? You’re trash,
always someone’s garbage thrown out. People leave you because you
deserve it. They saw who you are and couldn’t love you the way they
thought they could. Spare Tina. Spare her the disappointment of finding
out that you’re just Bette. Just Bette sitting on the curb, left behind
as always. You’re pathetic. She thinks she wants you right now, but if
she really gets to know you, she’ll find out that you’re too needy, too
desparate, too afraid, too… *****… crazy. And she won’t be able
to handle it and you’ll be alone again. As you should be. You crazy
    *****-up.

    5. Your writing is absolutely wonderful!! “She walked on stilts out the CAC and got into her car.” I could totally see that…what a fantastic description!! With your words, I am right there in the room, on Bette’s shoulder, hearing every word, feeling every vibration of emotion rolling through her body. Thank you!
