    Bette, Tina and their respective friends B/T

    Previously:

        Tina decided that if Bette didn’t want to run with her, she’d just have to run slower and be sneakier.

        Still one last sob ripped out of her throat. Why was it so hard to love Bette?

        “What do you want to do?”          
                                         

        “I want to get her back… but I don’t. Does that make sense?”

        “Nooo…”

        Bette sighed into the phone. After an hour of sleep
    troubled with nightmares of having her arms cut off, she woke up and on
    instinct, dialled Alice’s home number. She was surprised when Alice
    picked up after two rings. She had belatedly realized that Alice was
    probably at work and was about to hang up.

        “Okay, Bette,” Alice was saying, “You and Tina
    argued and you said some things not even an idiot would say…”

        “That’s not entirely fair. I didn’t say anything that wasn’t true!”

        “I’m sure you did Bette. How are the rides over there in DenialLand?”

        “Alice… what am I gonna do?”

         “Do what you want to do.”

        “I can’t beg her to come back to me at the same time keep pushing her away!”

        “Ahhh… you’re getting there Bette.”

        “What does that mean? Come on, Alice, I need help.”

        “Aha… the first step towards recovery is admitting
    you have a problem. At least that’s what they said when I went to that
    meeting… anyway, back to you.” Alice took a deep breath. In truth,
    she was a shriek away from going over to Bette’s and slapping her
    friend upside the head.

        When Bette called, she wasn’t surprised. During
    every one of Bette’s freak-out episodes, Alice always had front-row
    seats. She had hoped that Tina would’ve calmed Bette down some. So when
    Bette told her what happened, about how she’d chased Tina away, Alice
    was at the end of her rope.

        “Bette, why don’t you come over here? Dana’s flown
    to Cincinnati for a tournament and I’m feeling lonely. Let’s have a
    sleepover, yeah?”

        “It’s two in the afternoon. Unlike you, I prefer to do my sleeping at night.”

        “Whoa Bette, put away the talons. I wasn’t the one who ripped her woman’s heart to shreds.”

        Alice instantly regretted her words when the line
    went silent.  She could hear Bette’s breathing at the other end.
    Wow, even her breathing sounds so sad, Alice thought.
