If You Never Say Anything to Me ch. 25

I hated getting up but I had already slept most of the day away. Jumping into the shower refreshed me some and the coffee that I started almost gulping helped more. As much as I wanted to call Bette, I resisted. I had come home in order to take care of things that I needed to do so I began with laundry and a little cleaning before finally deciding to return the phone calls that I had missed. The first was to Mom.

“Hey Sweetie,” she said as she answered. “I thought that I was going to have to show up at your door to talk to you.” We both laughed. I knew she was teasing me but just the same, I needed to ensure that my lust for Bette didn’t make me neglect those others in my life. I settled onto the couch and replayed the weekend to Mom.

“Sounds like you had a great time.”

“I did Mom. She’s as wonderful as I imagined. She’s so easy to be around. Mom, her paintings are incredible.”

“Your dad will love to hear about her works. You know he is looking at some new pieces now. I’ve never really understood art well but he seems to have an eye for it.”

“Yeah, even growing up with Dad always bringing pieces home and trying his hand at it, I never really took the time to think about the artist or the creative process. When I was sleeping yesterday, she did a sketch of me that I swear Mom, was so canny that it was scary.”

“You said that she was a police officer. Is she giving that up now?”

“I don’t think she’s decided yet. She still isn’t cleared to go back to work so her looking at other things could just be because she’s not back at work.”

“If she goes back to work, how will you feel about being involved with a police officer?”

“It would be scary but I would deal with it. Mom, I can tell that she’s someone that I could fall in love with…I probably am already starting to fall in love with her. If being a cop makes her happy, I wouldn’t have a problem with it.”

“You think you’re falling in love with her?” I could hear the smile in her voice.
