Immortal Soul – Short Story
"And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes"
– Lord Byron
I carried her on.
She looks to be the very epitome of death, and yet I carry her on. Down the long corridor and up the stairs, she rests unconscious in my arms. Climbing each step, all my worry and concern is with her – this beautiful girl who had fallen so long ago at my feet. She had meant to serve me, and yet with that glow in her eyes, it is I who wish to serve her for the remainder of my life.
I couldn’t explain it at first, this deep yearning to protect my property, and yet she had become so much more to me within minutes of meeting her vibrant eyes. I had never known a feeling so powerful, never felt a love so strong, but in that moment, I was sure of it. And every time I stare into her eyes again, I am only more certain that my instincts have been correct all along.
Even now, limp in my arms, I take in deep breaths and carry her on. I wish to look into her eyes again – I need it. If I can not know that gaze any longer, I wish to die alongside her. I dream of death if my life must continue without her strange smile and silly discussions. So many times I had betrayed my logical reasoning to keep her at my side, and even when it meant danger to myself. I knew this was not accepted by any of my equals, and yet I couldn’t control this need. Who were they to me anyway? They were the ones who had striked her down on the gruesome field when all she had done was defend her own life.
I fight tears now with each step, remembering with a deep sadness when I had cast my eyes on her falling form. My order to stop seemed to flow from me much slower than I was capable, and the scream surely had captured the attention of everyone around. My feet couldn’t seem to move as quickly as I needed, and yet I know I had run faster in that moment than I had pushed myself in the past. I ran with all of my power, dropping to her side with more weakness than intent to do so. Instinctively I knew all eyes were sharply on me, but I couldn’t care for anything except the innocent young woman at my side. Why had she run into a soldier’s battle? One child’s life had meant so much to her to risk her own life. Stupid child, I thought. I’d rather she be safe than some stray child wandering where he was not welcome. A brutal thought for a woman most knew of in just that way, but not her. She understands everything about me. Every little side – the soft and the dark.

Wow.
WWWWOOOOOWWWWWW!!!!!1, hardly says it all. Please say there is more and that this is not a one-off. I want to know more about the child she was protecting, etc, etc, etc. Thanks for posting.
Nice.
Wow!!!
WOW, again. I couldn’t think to write a decent comment yesterday. The depth of emotion and the deep love expressed and the sorrow of not admitting that love between them was so heartbreaking. And very probably so heartfelt by everyone that read the chapter. Hope you can give us more background or explanation that tells us more about the time in which they lived and a bit more history. Loved that first chapter.
Thank you grindright.
Excellent and fantastic. Thank you.
This was a tear jerker.
Perfect!
That was beautiful.
ok. yeah…i’m in. graet beginning. can’t wait to read more. thanks for sharing and taking the time. lovin’ the simplicity of it all…
I think Byron himself could envy this story of yours! =) ( and with this sentence I didn’t mean to hurt some patriotic British feelings) the most impressing thing is that you were able to use some elements of this typical style which was used by Byron & co. too.deep emotions, mystery (you didn’t give us details), pain, tale-like circumstances (location of her room).so I have to say: do not pay attention to narrow-minded people who want to put you in a certain box. ;)
WOW just wow!
WOW! I’m totally speechless. I’ve been totally mesmerized by your writing.I really love how you wrote this fic, it’s full of emotions, full of literary beauty.I really hope that there’ll be more.
WOW AMAZING!
It was fantastic. just took my breath away!
It was painful and sad, but it was there in the background through the beautiful love that covered the two women.
I loved it!
