    In My Daughter’s Eyes

“Are you and Momma going to get married again?”

“I hope we will someday. I think that is what we both want.”

    Angie starts laughing.

“What is so funny?” Tina asked her daughter.

“I was just remembering. I told Momma that if you got married she should smash wedding cake in your face like me and Aunt Alice do for our birthdays. It’s a lot of fun.”

“Oh so you and Momma talked about us getting married, and you want Momma to smash cake in my face do you.” Tina tickles Angie making her laugh harder. ”I bet Momma liked that idea didn’t she.”

“She said she would lick it off your face. Gross!!”

Tina laughed at her daughter even though Bette licking her face was conjuring up images that she needed to suppress at the moment, none of which she would consider gross, especially if it were their ‘wedding cake’. They hadn’t yet talked about marriage or a commitment ceremony since they’d gotten back together.

    “Mommy, can I call Momma?”

Angie brought Tina’s attention back to her. Tina looked at her watch and with the time difference notes that it’s about 9:00pm in New York. She knows Bette is attending a dinner party, but Bette left strict instructions that Tina should call, not text no matter the time if either of them wanted to talk to her, especially Angie. She didn’t want a repeat of what had occurred over Spring break when she was so preoccupied with Jodi Lerner that she neglected her family.

“Sure. Use my cell phone. You know what numbers to press to get Momma on speed dial.”

Angie gets the cell phone, and presses Bette’s number. Bette picks up after a couple of rings. It’s a bit noisy in the background so she moves to a quiet place.

    “Hello?”

    “Hi Momma.”

    “Hi sweetie. How are you?”

“I’m good. I miss you Momma. Mommy said I could call you.”

“Sweetie I miss you too. I’m glad you called. What are you and Mommy doing?”

“Mommy is making dinner. I’m just coloring. Momma where are you?”

“I’m at a dinner, but we already finished eating. Now I’m just talking to some artists.”
