***CHAPTER NINETEEN***

Dan calls out to Tina to meet him in the hallway.  Alice and Dana and Kit stay in the waiting room.  Of course Alice is trying to read lips through the window!

Dan puts his arm around Tina as they walk down the hallway.  “Tina everything is going to be okay.  Your mother sent over a private nurse for Bette.  Her name is Patty and she’s very good.  She’ll take good care of Bette.  Now there’s one thing I need you to do.  You’re going to have to get an AIDS test.  Here is the paperwork from Dr. Newman.  The lab is on the main floor.  You make a left as you leave the elevator and then just follow the arrows.  The lab is waiting for you.”

Tina looks confused as she asks, “But Dan why do I need to get an AIDS test?”

“We don’t know exactly what happened to Bette.  We found needle marks on her arm.  Somebody could have used a dirty or shared needle.  We are just being careful.  I assume you’ve been intimate with Bette in the last couple of weeks.”  (Tina blushes and nods ‘Yes’)  Well let’s just be on the safe side.  Of course Dr. Newman has ordered an AIDS test for Bette.  She’ll take it after she finishes here.” (Dan is relieved that Tina didn’t ask if Bette has slept with a man.)

Tina asks a question.  “Is it all right if I wait here until you start the deprogramming?  I want to be here just in case.”  (Tina really doesn’t know why she has to be here?)

“Sure.”  Dan says,  “But don’t wait too long the lab is only open for another hour for walk-in lab work.  Tina remember what I told you.  If you hear Bette screaming your name you cannot come into the room.  You have to ignore it.  Bette will say some terrible things and use foul language.  If it becomes unbearable go down to the second floor.  Bette’s room is #210 and you can wait for her there.”

Dan walks back into Bette’s room and talks to the doctor’s.  Dan motions for Patty.  “We need to put the restraints on Bette now.  I’ve discussed with Shane how we’ll do it.  I’m going to distract Bette by telling her I spoke to Tina about getting an AIDS test.  While she’s questioning me about Tina’s response, you will put the restraint on Bette’s left foot.  Shane will do the same on her left hand.  I will do her right hand while I’m talking to her.  You will then have to come around to my side of the bed and secure her right foot.  Be careful she has a wound on the sole of her foot.”
