ONE MONTH AFTER CHAPTER 71

Helena had just let Bette into her mother’s Manhattan apartment. It was Peggy’s birthday – well it was the week of Peggy’s birthday and she liked to celebrate by having as many parties and dinner parties as she could to celebrate and to get drunk with the people she loved the most. Tonight was a dinner party with the guests being Melvin, Rosemary, Emma, Bette and Tina. Bette removed her jacket and looked at her best friend
“How was the date ?”
“Dull – I just wonder why I bother sometimes – she was very dull “
“Shame – she looked liked “
“If it had just been about looking at her I could have coped with another couple of dates but we didn’t have that much in common other than both of us being lesbians “
“Sorry Helena “
“Such is life – her lose and not mine “
“That’s the spirit Helena “
“How are things with you and the lovely blonde ?”
“Great – is she here yet ?”
“When I left the office to make sure the dinner party catering was in hand she and my mother were deep in conversation “
“How is she doing ?” Bette asked – Tina thought she was doing well but it was never that easy to say
“Great – mother is delighted with her – she’s got a good business brain and I have to say that it is rather wasted on the charity side of the business. “
Bette beamed
“And what do you think of her ?”
“She is great – she is professional and never lets her relationship with mom and I get in the way of what she does – she is a hit Bette – did you really expect her to be anything else other than a hit ?”
“Well she thought that she was doing well but its nice to hear it from you “
“She is wasted working in a bookstore – she should be doing something much more demanding and raking in a six figure salary to go with it “
“You sound like Emma “
“And how are things with Emma ?”
“You have only been in London for two weeks Helena – its hardly the other side of the galaxy”
“Yes but London is full of great shops and even greater lesbians – I was simply run off my feet darling “
“Poor you “
“I agree – it was hell “
Bette laughed and followed Helena into the main room of Peggy’s apartment
“I would seem to be the first one “
“Well someone has to be – so – how’s Emma’s love life ?”
“I gather that she and Val have ended things “
“Shame – any reason ?”
“Something about not being ready to go to the next level with a woman “
Helena pulled a face “That sounds like she is being a wimp – was Val nice ?”
“Yes – we met her a couple of times and she was very sweet – I am not sure she was feminine enough though “
“Meaning ?”
“I am not sure how butch Emma likes them – I would say not a lot. She likes them alpha for sure but maybe a little more lady like “
Helena laughed “Would you like a drink ?”
“I think I will wait – I don’t want to get too far ahead “
