    ___

Rosemary expected Peggy’s first question to be about the dinner the night before and barely had the strawberry blonde removed her jacket and sat down when she was asking the leading question
“So – how were the love birds ?” she asked sarcastically
“I am sure that you are expecting me to defend them right ?”
“Yes darling – your sweet nature is a very dear quality of yours but I also know that you will tell me the truth – tell me about your dinner “
Rosemary sighed – on the one hand she knew that her version of the night before would fuel Peggy’s determination to have them parted. But she could see why Peggy objected so strongly and she hadn’t seen the “ spark “ that Bette and Tina had assured her was there between the older and younger woman.
“We might have caught them on a bad evening – Bette and Tina have told us from the start that they have something special “
“Bette and Tina are wonderfully sweet – I took them for dinner the other night and it was such a pleasure to see two people who you just knew were going to spend their lives together “
“We are biased but we see that “
“At the moment Bette and Tina are looking at the world through rose coloured glasses – they want to see the whole world in love as much as they are – Bette has been looking for her princess for as long as I have known her “
“I know – she’s been let down really badly in the past but seeing her with Tina is so lovely “
“Nothing more than they deserve – I will be delighted to be there when they get married “
    “So will I “
“But we are not talking about two women who have found their soul mates – we are talking about Helena and Emma”
“Well for a start Bette was mighty pissed about something – she was very short with Emma”
“That would be Emma out biding her and me for a painting of my late husband’s yacht “
    “What !! “
“He had a yacht called “The Peggy Helena “ – Bette found a painting of it”
    “Florida “
“Yes – Florida – well Bette went to get the painting and found out that the deal she had been done was gazumped by dear Emma Kennard. I was furious and so was Bette”
“How the hell did Emma find this painting ?”
    “Her art dealer “
Rosemary frowned “ An art dealer – not my daughter “
“No – that really got at Tina apparently. But your daughter is truly amazing – she has commissioned the artist to do me a painting of the yacht – that is something that has touched me really deeply – your daughter is wonderful “
“She is – so – tell me more about this deal of Emma’s ?”
“Emma has a dealer and she was looking for ideas for Helena’s 30th – which is in a couple of weeks. She had no idea the personal significance of what she had found. She paid the dealer to break her word and got the painting and left Bette very angry. So although Bette has found a solution I think the three of us are very upset at Emma’s conduct”
“Well Emma is not covering herself in glory – she was needling Melvin about how what he did paid so baldy compared to what she did “
“She is a delightful woman isn’t she “ Peggy said dryly
“Melvin genuinely believes that he is doing something worthwhile – he gets justice for people who would never get it from Truman, Black and Kennard”
“I know that Melvin could have made much more money in private practice “
“Well Emma was niggling him “
“I wouldn’t have said that was the wisest move given that his daughter is very protective of him and so are you “
“It fizzled out luckily – Emma and Helena certainly are feeling sorry for themselves – that took over the conversation”
“That is a trait of Helena I am sad to say – so tell me honestly – do you see this spark that is supposed to exist ?”
Rosemary had decided that she was going to say what she had thought
“I thought they were two spoilt silly women “
Peggy was surprised that Rosemary had been so direct in her opinion – she nodded
“Thank you Rosemary – that rather tallies with how I feel about them. I think that it shows that Helena is immature – she shows no business sense and she takes for granted what she has been given. “
“What are you planning Peggy ?”
“To show Helena that Emma is not the woman for her – in the long run she will thank me for it but I am prepared to have her hate me in the short term. This charade has gone on long enough “

    1. Peggy’s reaction to the painting and repeating ‘John’ just makes me dislike Emma even more. I wonder how Helena will react when she sees it and then gets the other one from Emma? I wonder how the wretched Emma will react when she realizes what Bette did? Emma does not seem like an individual who accepts being one uped by anyone. Her comments to Melvin were condescending. Rosemary sees it as well. This is not a nice woman.

    2. Amazing chapter!

You tell so much in one chapter that it is hard for me to comment on everything.

The evening was a disaster and Rosemary and Melvin saw no spark, just two spoilt woman and i agree with that. Both are so set in their own minds, not being able to see further than their own world. They are not making any friends with their behaviour and their relationship will blow up in grand fashion.

So happy that Peggy loved the painting and that Bette made sure her late husband was on it. Very good and smart move.

It will be hard for Bette and Tina to stay out of the relationship between Helena and Emma, as best friend and as daughter they are in a difficult position. I hope it will not harm their own relationship, but so far they are handling it well.

They deserve a relaxing weekend away.

      Thanks for the update!

    3. Thanks Ally for another absolutely great post.

Your characters leap from the page and completely involve me in the story.

Can’t wait until Emma finds out what Bette has done!

Love that Bette and Tina have such a great partnership, they are truly made for each other.

Thanks again, stay safe and post soon

    4. Wonderful chapter…..Emma and Helena do not show the spark they claim they have to Melvin and Rosemary. Is that because the spark does not exist or is it that these two are so different from most people that they are unable to achieve a spark. They really seem to be totally consumed with themselves.

For Emma, life is a competition even competing with Helena in who can present the other with the most expensive restaurant or meal or entertainment. That would get old rather quickly for me. So she goes out to dinner and is being condescending to Melvin about the amount of money he makes. These are middle aged people who have selected their professions for whatever reason and stayed with them for almost 30 years. They love what they do or they would be doing something else. Money can be a great motivator early in one’s career, but once a person has established a reasonable standard of living, completed raising their children, then people work for the love of their work. As long as they have reasonable compensation, to meet their needs, many work for the love of it. Emma seems to be no more mature now than what she was in college.

Bette and Tina are handling the situation as well as can be. There is nothing they can do to make things better between Peggy and Emma. They have given their opinions and advice and now they just need to step back and wait to pick up the pieces when the final battle occurs.

By hanging this new painting in the office before Helena receives her painting is going to diminish the meaningfulness to Helena of Emma’s gift painting. It will no longer be the prize but only the second best. Emma is going to be really angry about this. This really is going to get bloody.

Peggy seems to be tired of the skirmishes and is ready to declare all out war. I really wonder if Emma and Helena have what it takes to even stay together until her birthday. Bette and Tina need to be out of town for the weekend as the battle of Peggy vs Helena and Emma will begin the moment the new painting is seen by Helena.

Great…great writing… love, love this story. Keep it coming…

      • I was just thinking that Emma should be more understanding of Peggy and the significance of the painting having lost Kate. She knows the sorrow and grief of having lost a spouse. Yet she seems to have zero compassion.
