It’s Over…Or Is It? (revised) Chapter 1 (January FF Challenge)

This story begins in ep. 2.1: Bette and Candace wake up in Candace’s bed about a month after Tina had discovered their affair, and Candace notices that Bette is distracted.

Candace: I’m so happy to have you here.
    [Bette seems lost in thought.]
    Candace: Hello?
    Bette: Hi.
Candace: Hey. Where did you go?
[Bette doesn’t answer. She stares at Candace. Candace seems concerned.]
    Candace: What’s going on?
[Bette looks away. She looks sad.]

Bette turned back towards Candace, her face a mixture of emotions.  "We need to talk."

Candace’s countenance darkened.  "No good conversation ever follows those words, you know."  She wanted to keep it light, but she saw immediately that that strategy wasn’t going to work here.  She moved next to Bette, propping herself on her elbow, bracing herself for what she imagined was to follow.

"I’m sorry, C–"I’m so, so, sorry.  I never meant for this to happen."

    "Don’t tell me this, Bette!"

"You know I can’t leave Tina hanging–that’s not fair to her."

"But what about me?  What about my feelings?  What has this past month been all about? And just last week, you were talking about us going away together later this year!"

Bette looked over at Candace, and saw the hurt in her eyes.  "You have to know that I care for you, Candace, very, very deeply.  But this is wrong, and you know it.  She and I had seven years together–"

"And you told me that things were really bad between you towards the end!"

"But you have to understand, that when I said ‘the end’, I meant of that phase of our relationship.  Obviously, I’ve fucked up royally."

"And for that reason–that you ‘fucked up royally’–you said you didn’t think you could go back!  And you’ve barely talked about her!"

"Don’t you think that might be because I feel so guilty about what happened?  I mean, I called you up after she and I had the fight, and we’ve barely spoken since then!  I just don’t know what to do, but I know I can’t keep doing this."

"What does ‘this’ mean to you, Bette?  Are you just going to walk away from me?  I thought you loved me!"

    1. I agree with the others, Candace was simply a symptom to a bigger problem. I also thought it strange that she would just disappear without so much as one confrontation. Great start. Enjoy your birthday!!

    2. Hello arkaycee, that was so very heart felt, the emotional wreckage that someone goes through can cause them to seek solace in places of comfort and that is what Bette found in Candace, after everything that was happening in her life up to and leading into their liaison she needed shelter where non could be found. Bette loves to freely and that is one of her major character flaws, it isn’t a bad thing it is just a part of her makeup and it makes her so human. This was exceptional, can’t wait for more. Sincerely, JC

    3. heeey, that was really good. i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again-candace was someone that bette needed in her life, when she needed her. whether it was meant to last or not, bette was a bit of a sh** to her in my mind. i liked your perspective on it all. ace!

    4. So this is what you were up writing while I was asleep…..I have to agree with the first two commenters….Bette does love freely and Candace came along at the right time……A time where she needed some attention….someone to make her feel alive…….Great as always and can’t wait to see where you go with this……..BTW……HAPPY BIRTHDAY BABE!

    5. Great conversation between the two. i’m not so sure that candance was what bette needed at that time, cuz it only made matter worse. bette and tina are both to blame for the failing marriage and lack of communication.

    6. Very interesting start, Arr. Glad you resumed writing fanfiction. I’ll certainly follow this one, though I would love it if you kept writing the old one ( which title I unfortunately forgot. Sorry… ) as well.

    7. Nice start Ar. I always wondered if Bette felt so much remorse then with find herself in Candace’s bed. Anger at Tina, need for consulation or did she have real feelings for Candace. I guess I need to read the other fics to see hwat the takes are. Nice start and HAPPY Birthday!!!. What is this the ?th anniversary of 29. ;=)

    8. Hey Arkaycee, What a turbulent and traumatic chapter that was. Good to see Candace’s point of view. I loved that Bette was so confused. I am a TiBetter at heart so hope that BEtte can make it work again with Tina but am happy to read your input of these event. More please. A Fan.

    9. What I love the most about the story is how beautifully you create the conflict for Bette using Candace. When Candace is talking to Bette and trying to convince her to stay in the relationship , you can feel Bette’s confusion and how she doesn’t want to disappoint Candace and yet she’s still very much tied to Tina. It was emotionally intense and I feel like you made a dope choice to include the song lyrics. I hope that you post more soon. Awesome.

    10. This was brilliant. It is so much easier to understand Bette’s feelings and motives when reading your story. It was left abruptly on the show. Have to say when Bette got on her knees in front of Tina in the lawyer’s office, I don’t know how Tina resisted. When Bette said “This is not who we are. We can fix this, T.”, I just melted. PPS. I can’t wait for more.
