CHAPTER TWENTY FOUR, Part One: Wishing and Hoping
Previously..
Tina sniffled and bit her lower lip, fighting back tears. Did Bette just dash her hopes and also build it up at the same time? The girl had worded her feelings in a way that made it difficult for the blonde to object to what Bette wanted to do, even though it went against what she herself wanted since the beginning. She felt immensely proud of Bette, but at the same time, she was sad for herself too. Bette can’t do it; she can’t fulfill the promise she made to her. If she was going to be honest to herself, then that is the one absolute thing that she didn’t want to hear. Its was her greatest fear that Bette was going to choose Jill over her; maybe not in a romantic sense, but still.
Giving the blonde no time to recover from her words and fully digest everything in, Bette spoke up once more. Gently, she tilted Tina’s chin up so their eyes could meet. “Baby, I love you so much. And I’m so sorry that I have to do this. I know I hurt you enough, and I know this is too much and I don’t have the right to ask this of you.. but..” She took a deep breath before continuing, her eyes looking pleadingly at the blonde. “Please, support my decision. I’m going to do the right thing by continuing to be in her life. I’m going to stand by Jill as a friend. And I’m asking you, as the one I love more than anything in this world, please..” She grasped Tina’s hands in her own. “..please.. stand by me too.”
Tina looked down at their joined hands, mulling over what her girlfriend was asking of her.
Bette wanted her support. Bette needed her. After telling her that she couldn’t fulfill her promise, she had sprung this request on her.
Tina could’ve stood up, said no and left Bette in a heap of guilt and tears. She could’ve shown her disappointment with her decision and walked away. She could’ve reacted violently and picked a fight with the girl for going against her word. She could’ve done all those things and more. She could’ve inflicted hurt – as much hurt as she was feeling now.
