Just The Girl 2.0 – Chapter Twenty One (based loosely on HYD: Returns)

    Well, except my own.

Those who take their own lives often leave notes – to say goodbye, maybe to pass blame, or if not, to absolve certain individuals from the burden of guilt. If they were kind enough, they left letters to help their loved ones understand just why – why they did what they did. I kept true to myself when I took my own life. When I died, I left no note, no messages, no clues. I gave them nothing – even those who deserved everything from me. No goodbyes.

Even on my last day on Earth, I was a spineless coward. Selfish too.

I left no note – the reason why those I’ve left behind got embroiled in a perpetual guessing game. He killed himself because he got fired – that was the main reason that most people seemed to agree on. He killed himself because he was depressed – some of my officemates deduced. Yet here comes the kicker.. Why was he depressed? Someone would follow up. Everyone would then shut up and think hard, trying to come up with a reason. Tricky, since I never gave them a reason to think I wasn’t fine when I was alive. After a while, one would say.. Nah, he couldn’t have been depressed. His life was perfect. A series of concurring murmurs would then go around the group, and then everyone would agree that Eric Walker killed himself because he got fired. I was in limbo, shaking my head at them.

But I guess I should be more understanding. I was damn secretive in life as well as in death. How could they have known that I had been falling months before I jumped off the 20th floor of the MVP Towers? The crash didn’t kill me.. it just ended my suffering. Certain people knew the truth, but believed that it was so damning that they kept it to themselves. Out of respect for me? Perhaps. But if you ask me, it was more out of selfishness; they needed to protect themselves. Human nature at its best.

I remember one December day in New York, a few months before I went sky diving in the city without a parachute – falling into the waiting arms of death. I was sitting at the steps of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, looking aimlessly at the crowd of pedestrians passing by Rockefeller Center. My lunch lay forgotten in my hand – the once warm hotdog victimized by the frigid winter air. It had remained uneaten and neglected for just a few minutes, and yet, there it was, practically frozen on my palm. Another waste, I sigh, balling it up with a napkin and throwing it inside a brown paper bag filled with my trash. This is what I got for being stubborn enough to eat my lunch outdoors, held captive by nature’s elements. The unforgiving weather kept most of my officemates indoors, scrambling for a decent restaurant or fast food with a working heater. I couldn’t be bothered to eat with them. It was another one of those days. The ones I called my “anti-social” days. I didn’t have enough strength to put on a fake smile and mingle – pretend like my life was the idyllic one that my colleagues led themselves to believe. They would often talk about me as if I weren’t there, discussing my life as if it meant something to them. I was the luckiest guy in the world, they often said in a tone which betrayed their envy. In their eyes, I was perfect. In their minds, I had it all. Oh, they were a naïve bunch. They were nice, but they were living in their fantasies. Didn’t they know that the most dysfunctional and unstable individuals are those who appear to have everything you’ve ever dreamed of? The irony never failed to amuse me.

    1. This is awesome. I love your long updates! Great chapter as usual I lol’d at the image of Melvin playing Bejeweled :) And loved that he thought Bette and Tina were role-playing. Can’t wait for next chapter! PPS

    2. Thanks for the update. I just love the banter amongst all the friends. I’m hoping that whatever Sam tells Bette will relieve some of her guilt feelings about Eric Walker’s death.

    3. Alchy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love it, love it, love it. Thank you for posting, I’ve been waiting patiently for this. Love the Santa Monica Blvd analogy LOL. Don’t worry about comments for me, you need to be saving your energy for this story, and yes I know you do read. I feel your narcissistic presence in the room LOL. A little late for the suggestion, but I thought maybe you could borrow Tina’s maid uniform for the party LOL. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Can’t wait for long awaited make up sex, OMG! Okay, get to writing, chop-chop.

    4. Alch, it doesn’t matter how much you write, you always leave me wanting more. Don’t forget to leave a little time for writing in that plan of yours…we would miss you way too much and we are already dying for your next update. Loved your chapter and your story…we are a totally awesome writer!

    5. Ha-hah…Alchy humor reigns again!!!! Glad you’re back! Sounds you are doing well. The Tibette banter…priceless! Too darn funny…immortal weed/undying pimple , role-playing and brushing teeth, “shippers”, bulling ‘little kids’, competetive Porters, etc. Hysterical! I like that you had them talk in the future tense (ie: sex and having children…that calls for a sequel.) Bring it on Alchy…you are amazing!

    6. cow and milkmaid – undying pimple – ahahahaha! the t&b banter was great, alchemy you’re so funny and such a good writer – thanks for sticking with this excellent story – you’ve nothing to worry about, this chappy was excellent like all the others ;-) i see the plot thickens with the whole eric thing – as always no matter how long your chappy is, i still want more. thanks again for this delicious story!

    7. Its such a beauty having Bette and Tina talk about their future despite what the obstacles they are going through. Cant help but smile on the though of mini Tibettes.:)

    8. Great update! Hysterical, as always… your imagination is comedic genius…too many one-liners to mention them all. Love the way you’re bringing B&T back together and anxiously await the painful truth. I can’t wish you luck to finish the story in December cause I don’t want it to end!!
