    Kiss Me at Midnight

    ————————————————-

Tina took a drink of her club soda as she bobbed her head to the music. She only had two glasses of champagne and that was enough. She didn’t want to get wasted and make a fool out of herself. She took another drink of her soda and felt someone touch her shoulder.

    “Hey Tina,” she smiled.

“Hey Shane.” She gave her a hug, and Shane gave her a kiss on the cheek. “Cute hat.”

Shane was wearing a plastic tiara with Happy New Year on it.”Thank you.” She smiled.

    “Enjoying yourself?”

“Kind of, I lost Grace in the crowd.”

    “Grace? Who’s Grace?”

“She was my date tonight.” Shane took a drink of her beer tonight. “I think her name is Grace.” Tina looked at her friend.

“How many beers have you had?”

Shane looked at the bottle before her and shrugged. “I don’t know,” she drank the suds. “Where’s Bette?”

“Working late,” she looked down. “Hopefully, she’s on her way.” She nodded.

“I hope so; this isn’t a party without Bette.” She went to take a swig of her beer to find it empty. “I gotta get myself another beer, but I’ll see you around. Have fun.”

“You too, and be careful.” Shane winked at Tina and walked away. Tina shook her head as she looked at the TV screen and noticed that the time was 11:50PM. She looked at her phone and noticed that she had a new voicemail. She didn’t hear her phone ring, but she was hoping that it was Bette. She listened to her message and smiled when she heard Bette’s voice. She heard the word promise and really hoped that Bette will keep her word to make it there to be with her tonight.

“The town is packed and partying hard for the New Year. If you’re not out, you should be at home with your loved ones.” Bette sighed heavily as she turned off her radio. She was in bumper to bumper traffic. She honked her horn a long with everyone else.

“Tee—I’m coming baby.”  The cars began to move a little more and then stop. “Shit,” she noticed an empty space on the street and hit her blinker. She pulled over and parked her car. She grabbed her purse and got out of the car. She locked it and began to make her way to the Planet on foot. She looked at her phone, and it read 11:52 PM.
