    Chapter 30

“So…, have you heard from Tina?” Lily asked Bette as they cleared away the breakfast dishes.

Bette laughed, how many times had Lily mentioned Tina in the last two days, “you know, I already got the message…”

“She left you a message…, that’s great, how is she getting on?”

Bette smiled as Lily seemed intent on busying herself, “not a message from Tina…, your message…”

Lily stood up straight and turned to face Bette, noticing the hint of a smirk on Bette’s face, “I haven’t left you a message.”

“I know you haven’t ‘left’ a message, I mean the message about me and Tina…”

“I’m just making sure you don’t…,you know…” Lily brought her hand to her head, a sudden pain hitting her temples.

Bette saw the immediate change in Lily’s demeanour; she took the few steps to her side, “Lily, what’s wrong…?”

“Oh it’s nothing, just a bit of a headache this morning.”

    “For how long?”

“Its nothing, I’ve taken a couple of those tablets the doctor gave me…” Lily said as she ignored Bette’s hand on her arm and carried on clearing the table.

“Lily please…, I need you to tell me if anything is going on…”

“It’s just a little headache, I have them, I’m sure you have them, I’m sure Tina is having one trying to sort that divorce of hers out.”

Bette sighed as she watched this stubborn woman carrying on regardless.

“Anyway, as I was saying” Lily said as if their conversation had not even been interrupted, “I don’t want the two of you to…”

    “To what?”

“I don’t want you to…, fuck it up!”

Bette burst out laughing at the expletive coming from the older woman, not having heard her utter the word before.

“Why are you laughing?” Lily asked, “This is serious stuff going on, and if I know anything about you, then…”

Bette was hit by the words…, “then what?”

Lily berated herself as she noticed the sudden hurt in Bette’s eyes, “honey…, when I leave this world, I want to go knowing that you have someone in your life that loves you…”

    1. I hold my breath… the deep darkness consumes as the memories of loss and those tender moments of release cascade across my soul… I am taken back… and I open my eyes to see her there… that one special soul that changed my world… that gave me meaning… that released my inner fire… and she was gone… that one that special someone that held me tight and took my hand… told me how special I was and to never let go… to see the future and hold it close… to close my eyes and see her face… to see her face… that was so beautiful Jo… so incredible… you have unleashed a wave of emotions that have been buried until hidden memories and deep love… thank you for sharing your words… thank you for awakening another part of my soul… thank you… JC

    2. That was.. sad. I hope Bette doesn’t take it too hard. I knew after your authors note she was probaby going to die here.. but still, it was tough to read.

    3. Jo that was sadly beautiful.I hope Bette and Tina can have a relationship like Lily and Maxy. I also hope that Tina comes back to support Bette and tells her she loves Bette.

    4. Thank you, it wasn’t in a garden, but I was holding my Mom’s hand when she died. Just closed her eyes, a deep breath and gone. I knew, and held her hand a few minutes longer, till they checked on her. After batteling Alzheimers for 20 years, a wave of relief, sorrow and joy came over me all at once. It was the end of a long journey for her, and me. I only wish my relationship with her before was what Lilly and Bette shared. But, I wouldn’t have traded those last nights with her for anything. Thank you again. PPS..:)

    5. Somehow I knew that the first two pages were leading up to this. It was beautiful. What a way to go. . .peacefully rocking, looking at the garden and holding the hand of someone you love as you leave to see the love of your life! Thanks.

    6. Ahh…I knew Lilys leaving would be sad,but you`ve done it in such a beautiful way..and though Bette is, and will be heartbroken….she will cherish the fact that she was always `there` for Lily even at the end holding her hand,a simple but loving and comforting gesture ….You`ve done a great great job with a delicate suject..Lily was a wonderful caracter to this story….Told ya “All the best ones have a sad part”

    7. that was beautiful Jo… i know it must of been really hard to write… now make sure tina gets back to help bette through the next few days… and the rest of their life…

    8. WOW, you are amazing. I think I held my breath through a good part of this chapter. You brought this passing to light in such a delicate and tender way. I’m REALLY going to miss Lily. I hope that Bette will always hold onto everything she learned from this amazing woman. GOOD STUFF mate, and I can see why you found this a little hard to write. C xx

    9. Is it your wonderful writing?… Probably. Is it that we came to deeply care about this amazing lady in Bette’s life?… Very likely. Is it that through Lily, we got to know a bit of the woman in your life who inspired her character?… Most certainly. For all of these reasons, not only was this chapter very beautiful and deeply moving, but for the first time – and why do I feel it to be so expected and natural that it had to come from your words – for the first time, Jo, I cried reading fanfiction…

    10. Beautifully done, thank you….I think i also wasn’t able to take in a breath from the time that Lily left the house – I was a little fearful that she would pass there at the church, alone (but not really, i guess). The image of her & Bette on the porch had me in tears but smiling through them, simply wonderful!

    11. Jo, even though we lost Lilly in this chapter, it was beautifully written. Hopefully Tina will return shortly so that Bette will not have to go thru this alone.

    12. Actually, I’m not sure I’m even capable of commenting on this chapter just now… I feel like I need a little longer to actually take in what I just read… That said, one word keeps popping in my head… Beautiful. I won’t lie, I was expecting ( as well as dreading ) those last few words, but this was very moving. Lily was a truly exceptional person and I believe you paid a fabulous homage to the Lily in your life through this story. Don’t get me wrong though, I wish you you could keep writing this story for there are still so many things left to tell, so many roads to take… I just hope this is not the end of the journey.

    13. don’t know what to say…it was beautiful, you made me cry too…glad Bette was there with Lily…i hope we’ll get to see happy times now with B&T

    14. Beautiful, wonderful, touching, sad, lovely…all these words and more… so sad to see Lily leave Bette, but she’ll be with her Maxie again. Please bring Tina back soon to help Bette deal with her loss. Thank you for such a wonderful story, Jo. Looking forward to more.

    15. And that’s why you’re Jo! I have been steeling myself for this chapter for some time now, but it still made me cry. This was so beautifully written that it’s impossible to not be awed by it.

    16. HEY Jo, Thank you ofor the perfect ending to a life well lived. Lily was the most wonderful parent to Bette after Maxy passed away. She understood the mixed up emotions of this lost child. I love that Lily was able to visit a place truly treasured by her adn Maxy; the church. Amazing that one place can make the years fade away and your heart full with love given the wondrous times shared there. Then her return was sad yet poignant as it closed a chapter in Bette’s life. One reason she could was the knowledge that Tina would be there for Bette; strong and kind; private and sharing; open and determined. A true equal who challenge and support Bette in everything that she does. Many thanks for brining eyes to my eyes. Such beauty is stunning. Your Loyal Fan. PS – Loved Lily’s cussing and Bette reproachment. Good to have the humorous and the tradegy of life intermingled. Keeps it real and honest.

    17. Jo, as a writer you are able to evoke so many emotions. You can do any thing from comedy right through to tragedy. From the get go we knew where you were gently leading us & Lily. It moved me to tears. I did chuckle at the cussing. The reaction from Lily reminded me of my Mum. She would do that! She passed away 2 1/2 years ago. But as you see from your other readers, you bring out so much with your words. Long may you continue!

    18. We’re crying. It was so bittersweet. Lily’s parting was peaceful, though painful. B will certainly need T around, to help her cope with her loss. It is always painful to let our beloved ones part. Especially those who have played a significant role in our lives. And even though we know they shall live in our hearts, forever, the pain of their absence is not diminished throughout the years. Thanks Jo, for this wonderful, but sad update. We understand how hard it was for you to write. PPS Hugs, Sincerely, Lucero & Marsha – From Mexico City

    19. You were right, it was very hard to read. The loss of a loved one is never easy even if you know in your heart they are better off to move on from this world. Sometimes the physical pain your loved one is in is unbearable and the only relief is to move on. I hope that Bette is able to find the peace in her heart and know that Lily and Maxy are back in the same realm.

    20. I was just so happy that Lily is with her beloved axy and that Bette was with her and she didnt go alone. This story has been so beautiful. We need move Love Stories like this thanks

    21. My eyes instantly filled with teers the moment I reached the end of the chapter, my God it was so emotional, you wrote it perfectly, but Jo couldn’t you keep her for a while longer, she was such a beautiful spirit and everyone fell in love with her the moment her presence was announced in the story, wow your alone time make wonders, I hope you are doing great and your family too. Poor Bette I can’t begin to imagine how she will cope knowing she has nobody that she can lean on or go to when she is the most vulnerable, I hope what happened makes her open her heart to it’s fullest to love. Thank you my dear friend. With all my best& don’t forget to post soon.

    22. Oh, my god, that was beautiful… really it was… It’s such a long time I didn’t comment anything in this place I love and need so much, and I’m truly sorry for that – but life can be so hard to bear sometimes… For you, to express my deep emotions reading this new gem of yours, I break the silence : your Lily was always one of the most endearing character ever and she WILL always be. Such deeply beautiful persons – and I mean the true beauty here, the inside one, the soul’s one – never really die, because people who loved them will always keep them alive in their hearts and thoughts… I wished a sweet calm “last sleep” for her and for that I thank you. Isn’t it the most beautiful way to “go away”, thinking about the love of your life, waiting to meet her again, at least, and all of that when your daughter-of-heart keep your hand in hers ?? Beautiful, that’s beautiful, beyond the sadness… A smile mixed with tears, like a marvellous rainbow of emotions… Thank you – so much. You make me crying and you just broke my silent walls for a while… I always so deeply loved this story of yours : it’s very, very special to me…

    23. This is such a touchng story to read. I think we have all had a “Lily” in our lives who sees us for who we really are, and with who we don’t have to hide. Thanks for sharing this story with us. Taz

    24. Very touching, deeply moving. This reminds me of what Elizabeth Kubler-Ross described in her book, “On Death and Dying,” as THE SILENCE THAT GOES BEYOND WORDS: “Watching a peaceful death of a human being reminds us of a falling star; one of a million lights in a vast sky that flares up for a brief moment only to disappear into the endless night forever.” I read this book to help me cope with the death of a dear friend. Bette’s in enormous pain and grief but she has loved and treasured Lily while she was still alive so I think this would help her recover and in time get used to the pain, the sorrow which never goes away. Thank you for this gem, Jo. Again, it was an honor and a pleasure to “grill” you when you were on spotlight. PPS.
