Laid Up: Another Season 3– Chapter 21C
“Oh.”
“Is that why you said it?” Dylan wondered aloud.
“No.” Helena stared up at her. “I actually didn’t want to tell you. It slipped out.”
“It slipped out while you were coming?”
“Last night I was positively gutted by what you told me. Still I wanted to say it. I was hurt and to add to the true hellishness of it, I knew that I had fallen in love with you. What kind of daft woman even thinks about saying something like that when the object of her affection has just confessed to a scheme to separate her from several million?” Helena sat up, turned away from Dylan, held her face in her hands for a moment or two, and then she slowly took in this woman who had stolen her heart. “I held back last night, but I just couldn’t hold it in any longer.”
Dylan put her arm around Helena’s waist and squeezed her against her. “That’s okay. I’m glad you told me.”
“So, I believe you also said that you love me.”
“I did.”
“And was that because you were in the throes of sexual excitement?”
“The quote is, “everyone says I love you when they’re coming.’” Dylan paused, put her hand on Helena’s cheek and turned her face to her. “I wasn’t coming when I said it the first few times.”
END CHAPTER 21C
Notes: Spoilers
Season 2, Episode 12: (Melvin at Bette’s house, dying and saying, “Don’t leave, Maxine. Don’t run away again. . . “)
– Maxine and Melvin’s conversation in 1973
Season 1, Episode 8: Yolanda/Bette argument about race during group therapy and Bette’s brief comment to Tina at home, later that evening.
– The Maxine and Melvin conversation is my response to that argument and I thank, Steph’s transcripts from www.l-word.com for the transcripts:
Bette: (sighs) Because some girl from the Midwest who hasn’t even met a lesbian and who thinks we have horns isn’t about to choose us as the adoptive parents for her baby. It’s just the way the system works right now.
Yolanda: That’s only if you’re set on getting a newborn white baby.
Alma: (to Yolanda) What’s wrong with a white person wanting a white baby?
Bette: I think most people want to have a family that looks like the family that they grew up in.
[Yolanda sits up and looks at Bette.]
Dan: Yolanda? You have something you want to say to Bette?
Yolanda: (to Dan) I do. (to Bette) You talk so proud and… forthright about being a lesbian. But you never once refer to yourself as an African-American woman.
[Bette huffs.]
Yolanda: All I hear you saying is that white people should only take care of white babies.
[Yolanda lays back down. Bette sits up.]
Bette: I said nothing of the kind. In fact, I was just about to say that Tina and I chose an African-American donor because it was important to us to have a family that reflects who we are.
[Yolanda sits up.]
Yolanda: Before you can reflect who you are, you have to be who you are. I mean, look, they’re wondering what the hell we’re talking about because they didn’t even know you were a black woman. (laying down) I think before you have a child, you need to reflect on what it is you’re saying to the world while hiding so behind the lightness of your skin.
[Bette smiles and shakes her head.]
Bette: (calm) You know… you know nothing about me. You don’t know how I grew up. You don’t know how I live my life.
Later:
[Tina is laying on the bed, eating. She’s got the laptop and is researching Yolanda on the internet. Bette is in the bathroom, getting ready.]
Bette: (brushing hair) Who the hell does she think she is? I mean, I’m a total stranger to her. She knows nothing about my race politics, nothing about my self-identification, nothing.

sorry for your loss-hang in there
Wow, really, just, well wow. I was enthralled, nervous, excited, riveted, the adjectives could go on forever. I have always loved this story and was aware as to why you had not been posted. I had sent my best wishes when you informed everyone what was happening in your personal life, wishing the best for you. I’m sorry to hear that the outcome was losing your mother, it’s hard. Hopefully time has helped heal that wound and you focus on the positive memories you have of your time together. I can really feel the presense of these experiences in your writing, in the writing of this updat. it was absolutely amazing. i look forward to seeing you back on the boards and know that your fanfic friends have you in their thoughts!
this story is amazing, your characters are so real, so believable, thanks so much for this update it really made my day!
Damn! If there ever was an awared for the longest chapters you would win hands down! This was bloddy fantastic! The shit is really about to hit the fan! My heart goes out to you for your loss.
I hope your grief diminishes and your memories grow. As for your chapter…holey moley! Good for you for writing such thoughtful and substantive piece…and all those pages…holey moley! All the best to you. Cheers.
I lost my mother a year ago, so I can empathize with your loss. I’ve been a huge fan of this story from day one. Its polish, consistently high quality, and yes, length, is clearly the result of prodigious effort, and I thank you for sharing it with us. Like earlier installments, this chapter ran an emotional gamut: lines like “Bette would have had a conniption if she had heard herself described as a bull dyke” made me laugh out loud; the wrenching account of Bette’s childhood abandonment did the opposite. Take care, and post whenever you’re so inclined.
Portia, I’ve missed you and this story–what a treat to log on and find you’d left a 49 page chapter! On a more somber note, I’m sorry to hear about your mother’s passing. I can’t imagine how difficult that must have been. Take care of yourself, and keep writing–it can be good therapy.
Dear Portia, Its taken me three days to find the time to read this big chapter – and it was worth every moment. I was very sad when I got to the last page and read that you’d just lost your mother. You’ve given so much to us in your time of grief – thank you for sharing your time and talent.
i am not a big commentor, i always feel someone has already said what i want to say, but i felt the need to comment on this chapter. i too lost my mother recently in nov. and there is not a day that goes by that i don’t think about her, and i too feel the void, like a part of you is missing, and i just wanted to say i understand what you are going through, and my thoughts and prayers are with you now. great writing!!!!!!
