Laid Up: Another Season 3– Chapter 21C
Previously (from March 4):
– Carmen and Shane were on their way to Oregon City for Shane to meet her father for the first in many years.
– A psychic hired by Helena told Bette and Tina that Angelica might be in some sort of danger.
– Tina and Bette stood outside of Kit’s apartment building waiting for a cab to take Bette to the airport to fly to Olympia, Washington for a Buddhist retreat. Their goodbye was watched by Josh Brecker who had just been fired from the Neuro-trauma Center after Bette heard him hit on Tina.
– Alice and Dana decided to get married in Canada where it would be legal and Alice informed the Fairbankses that they were coming to Orange County for a visit.
– Dylan confessed about the plot to sue Helena for sexual harassment. She explained that her feelings were true and the money was of no interest to her. Danny, Dylan’s ‘boyfriend’ threatened Dylan. Helena, so concerned for Dylan’s well-being hired a private investigator to watch Danny while she agreed to try to move beyond Dylan’s betrayal since she wasn’t prepared to give up on them.
– Stephanie flew back to North Carolina to pack up her belongings and move back to LA to be with Dr. Henry McPherson.
– Theresa called her ex-husband and threatened his life for what he had done to Stephanie.
– Kit was preparing for her recording session with Nona Hendryx.

The drive from Portland’s airport to Gabe McCutcheon’s house in Oregon City would take a little less than half an hour. At the airport, when they acquired the rental car, Shane had turned the keys over to Carmen without a moment’s hesitation. She was too nervous to attempt a drive. Shane sat in the passenger’s seat gnawing away at her thumb. The skin was already torn from picking at it and the small wound stung. At least it was taking her mind off of what she was about to do. Honestly, it wasn’t distracting her much at all. She felt twitchy and was running a wishlist through her head that things would go well; that her father would be happy to see her; that she would feel loved. Carmen merged into the south bound traffic on the Veterans’ Memorial Highway.

sorry for your loss-hang in there
Wow, really, just, well wow. I was enthralled, nervous, excited, riveted, the adjectives could go on forever. I have always loved this story and was aware as to why you had not been posted. I had sent my best wishes when you informed everyone what was happening in your personal life, wishing the best for you. I’m sorry to hear that the outcome was losing your mother, it’s hard. Hopefully time has helped heal that wound and you focus on the positive memories you have of your time together. I can really feel the presense of these experiences in your writing, in the writing of this updat. it was absolutely amazing. i look forward to seeing you back on the boards and know that your fanfic friends have you in their thoughts!
this story is amazing, your characters are so real, so believable, thanks so much for this update it really made my day!
Damn! If there ever was an awared for the longest chapters you would win hands down! This was bloddy fantastic! The shit is really about to hit the fan! My heart goes out to you for your loss.
I hope your grief diminishes and your memories grow. As for your chapter…holey moley! Good for you for writing such thoughtful and substantive piece…and all those pages…holey moley! All the best to you. Cheers.
I lost my mother a year ago, so I can empathize with your loss. I’ve been a huge fan of this story from day one. Its polish, consistently high quality, and yes, length, is clearly the result of prodigious effort, and I thank you for sharing it with us. Like earlier installments, this chapter ran an emotional gamut: lines like “Bette would have had a conniption if she had heard herself described as a bull dyke” made me laugh out loud; the wrenching account of Bette’s childhood abandonment did the opposite. Take care, and post whenever you’re so inclined.
Portia, I’ve missed you and this story–what a treat to log on and find you’d left a 49 page chapter! On a more somber note, I’m sorry to hear about your mother’s passing. I can’t imagine how difficult that must have been. Take care of yourself, and keep writing–it can be good therapy.
Dear Portia, Its taken me three days to find the time to read this big chapter – and it was worth every moment. I was very sad when I got to the last page and read that you’d just lost your mother. You’ve given so much to us in your time of grief – thank you for sharing your time and talent.
i am not a big commentor, i always feel someone has already said what i want to say, but i felt the need to comment on this chapter. i too lost my mother recently in nov. and there is not a day that goes by that i don’t think about her, and i too feel the void, like a part of you is missing, and i just wanted to say i understand what you are going through, and my thoughts and prayers are with you now. great writing!!!!!!
