Let It Happen – Chapter XI

When the scarf fell away, Tina noticed Bette had lost weight, and was almost skinny.  Her face was drawn more tightly, as a result, and the thinner look of it accentuated her cheekbones.

Bette, Bette, Tina thought, as she sat back, after tucking the scarf  in, and tearing up again.  Did I do this to you?

They had gone two full circles around, and began to ascend a third time.

In a far away voice, Bette asked, “How did you find me, Tina?”  Her head was still drawn back, neck stretched, eyes shut.  But she had dropped her hands, and had tucked them in, under the scarf.

“Technically, I didn’t.”  She paused, considering whether or not to tell her exactly how, and then decided that she should.

“Mike did.  He called me, and told me he thought that they had tracked your signal to the surrounding area.”  Bette opened her eyes and stared at the ceiling, eyes lost in thought.

”I’d told him last week that I would be in Paris this week for the premiere of a film I had produced for Shaolin Pictures.”

Tina continued, “At first I was stunned that you were in Paris, at all. And when he mentioned the general vicinity that they detected your signal in, on a hunch I thought you would be here.  So I rushed here, and when the driver and I ran past the small gate, I shouted to him that we needed to catch this carriage. As we neared the Ferris wheel, I’d seen you go into this carriage, and the carriage itself looked familiar…” she halted, stumbling at the last part, as she remembered what they had done in the carriage about two years ago.

Bette cut in, “I meant how, Tina.”

Tina paused, considering again how much to tell Bette.  She didn’t want to get Mike or anyone in trouble.  But Bette had a determined look in her eye.

    “Your satellite phone.”

“Oh…. my call to Mike about Kit two months ago,” Bette guessed.

“Yeah.  Once they got your signal, they had a tracer on it, so that whenever it would switch on, you could be traced, eventually.”

“And my call to the bank about an hour ago…”

“Yeah, it triggered the tracer.  When Mike called, he cautioned me that you may not be in the area any longer, but I drove over anyway.  It was the closest lead I’d gotten to your location after a year of searching….”  Tina fell quiet, as Bette hung her head, and held it with her hands.

    1. Oh my, this chapter was so painfully sad to read, I’m feeling quite emotional right now – as I’m feeling too in my life currently…
Amazingly enough, I always seem to choice the stories I read or movies I watch or even music I hear following my heart and mind’s state and that’s both a curse and an addiction, I’m afraid,,,
Anyway, I’ll follow you anywhere because of your talent – and I’m confident for my dearest two, the way I was during all these cruel seasons 3 and 4 of The L Word at the time, hoping each year that my Tibette’s heart will stop to suffer !! Well, what can I say ? I’m a hopeless romantic – for the best and the worse,,,

    2. Hello, again.

Yes, this the valley that they had to get through, in order to reach the peaks of their relationship. Sometimes, as a reader, you do wander into stories that feel familiar, so I know what you mean when you say that your heart and mind are tuning into these types of stories if there’s something in them that feel familiar.
I hope you stick it out and read the rest of this book, though, because your belief in romance will be repaid, trust me!

      Take care,

      S
