Let It Happen – Chapter XIII

Bette said exasperatedly, “Well, I don’t know what to say, T.  When do you want to do this?”

The brunette took a deep breath, and then rubbed her temples with both hands.  They were both standing now, facing each other.  Then a thought occurred to Bette.

“Do you want to do this at all, Tina?  I mean, for us to look at apartments or places in order to eventually find our own place here in New York?”

Tina didn’t respond immediately, and instead, threw up her hands, and then gripped her head between her hands.

“Yeah, yeah, of course I do. We’re spending a fortune renting right now…”

“But I’m not asking about that part of it, T.  It wasn’t about the money.”

They were both silent, eyeing each other.  After a minute of silence, Bette asked in even tones, “I’m asking whether this is something you want for the both of us.  Are you having a problem with the idea that we look for a place for us?”

“Didn’t I just say, yes, I do want to look for a place?!,” Tina responded, with an edge to her voice. What the hell is Bette playing at?

“Because we don’t have to,” Bette answered quickly, her voice icy.

Dan sat up, writing more quickly now.

Tina shook her head, looked down at her feet, then sat down heavily on one end of the sofa.  She gripped her forehead, and then buried her face in her hands.  She kept silent rather than respond to Bette.

Bette spun away from Tina, and started to pace behind the couch, hands on her hips.

After a few minutes, Dan cleared his throat.

“Believe it or not, this is progress,” he began, then put his hands out in to signal “settle down,” when Bette and Tina both turned to look at him, in surprise.  Bette thought, “Who is he kidding?  We are far, far away from making any progress.”

“But we’re nearing the end of this session.  I’d like both of you to think about what it is that you both want.”

With a frown, Bette sat down on the other end of the sofa, not looking at Tina, and they both continued to look at Dan.  They said nothing to each other, or to him.
