“Mom and I both have to go to work tomorrow,” Tina continued. “Remember, tomorrow you come over to my house to stay for the week.”
“I think you should come and stay with us Mommy,” Angelica stated before reaching for her cup again.
“You should stay with them, Tina” Alice repeated.
“Alice.” Bette said sternly.
Alice fell silent.
“Here comes breakfast,” Shane said, a note of relief in her voice. She started clearing a space for the plates that were arriving.
“You get grapes and kiwi, sweetie,” Tina pointed out Angelica’s fruit bowl when it was set down.
The awkwardness of the conversation that had been taking place dissipated as everyone started breakfast. The clang of cutlery against plates rang out as more casual banter continued.
“Can we bring anything over this afternoon Bette?” Dana asked before scooping up a forkful of egg white omelette.
“Just your bathing suits,” Bette replied. She turned to her daughter. “You’ll have lots of pool playmates today.
“Not just you and Mommy, like yesterday,” Angelica replied.
Bette smiled.
“Right sweetie.” Really, what more could she say?
Shane brought her coffee cup up to hide the smile that was forming.
“There aren’t really any secrets with her around are there?” Dana observed wryly.
“No, not at all,” Tina agreed. “She has a tendency to keep everyone honest.”
“Honesty,” Alice pondered the word. “Quite a concept.”
“Privacy,” Bette said, her head tilted to the side, but clearly speaking to Alice. “Another concept.”
“Okay, I’ll grill the kid later, and leave you two alone, fine,” Alice said as she threw her hands up in mock surrender.
Shane playfully tapped Alice’s shoulder with the back of her hand.
“What?”
“Just go with the flow Al,” Shane said lightly, as she pushed Alice’s cappuccino towards her.
Alice took a sip, and thought better of trying to make an argument for her inquisitive nature.
They all chatted jovially as they finished their meals. One by one each woman left to prepare for an afternoon at Bette’s, until just Tina, Bette and Angelica were left. Angelica was occupied with colouring one of the place mats on the end of the table that had been cleared for her.
“You still have the ring,” Bette said.
“Of course,” Tina replied. “Don’t you?”

I certainly remember this story and I love it more now. Thanks for updating the language so the profane language is present. It’s not that I am a complete potty mouth but let’s be realistic. Several of the stories that have transferred over have blanks or asterisks instead of the actual language. In my opinion, when this happens, the stories lose some of their authenticity and the characters lose their edge. I realize that it takes effort to fill in the blanks especially in longer stories. So thanks for doing that.
I find stories harder to read with the asterisks inserted…it’s like a jolt of reality interfering with my escapism. I had to get to the task of editing them out. I do plan to work on more stories; some easier than others because of where the files are. This story was first posted almost 10 (!) years ago, so the digital file was more challenging to retrieve. I’m not much for cursing, but the occasional well placed F-bomb can really get someone’s attention.
@JKS I can’t believe this story is almost 10 years old! It reads now as fresh as it did then. I really love your stories because they are so well written with realism, humor, sarcasm and authenticity. It also helps that for us ORs (Original Readers), it follows canon for the characters and storylines. :-)
