    Life Changes

Bette was fortunate to get an appointment with Joyce Wischnia just a few days after returning to California. They met in her office. Joyce gave Bette information and available resources regarding single parent adoption laws in general and also specific to private and independent adoptions which was the type Bette was considering.

“Bette from what you’ve told me and what I’ve been able to gather about you I don’t see any reason why your petition to adopt this baby wouldn’t be granted. You would have to undergo a home study conducted by the social services department of California. This is a requirement in all states prior to the finalization of an adoption. They use the studies to determine the suitability of prospective adoptive couples and singles to parenting.”

“Is there a format for the home study?”

“There are no set formats. They can include several interviews with you, your family, friends, and siblings. They might inquire about one’s attitude towards raising children or might include questions regarding health and safety as they relate to your home and neighborhood.”

“What else does the adoption process entail?”

“Of course there is legal work which I will complete for you. Since you already know the birth parents we would consider it an open adoption. This gives us the advantage of time and of being able to talk directly with the birth parents if you have any issues or concerns.”

    “Do you foresee any obstacles?”

“There are always unforeseen obstacles but for the most part I think you have the advantage. Marcus and Francesca know you, trust you and have chosen you to parent their child. They will feel more in control when giving the baby directly to you as opposed to giving him/her to an agency or person unknown to them. They have already expressed their desire to give up complete parental rights so they will have no say in how you raise the child. However you will need to have a discussion regarding the amount of contact between them and the baby. Considering that you have a personal and long standing relationship with Marcus and you are contemplating a business relationship with Francesca you’d want to avoid any awkwardness, so talk it through with both of them and set clear expectations.”
