Looking Glass – Chapter 9
~~~~~
Winter, 2008 – Bette’s house, evening
"They’re trying to rob me!"
Bette glanced over Jodi’s shoulder at the lease papers spread out on the kitchen table. She smirked, "Most of their tenants aren’t insurance risks due to their welding equipment."
Jodi jokingly hung her head. "Yeah, I guess. Maybe I’ll keep one of my student’s sculptures and sell it for the deposit money."
Bette laughed. "I can loan it to you if you need it."
She immediately shook her head. "No, no, I was kidding about the money – I’m just playing." She smiled at Bette. "You’re sweet."
"Then … why don’t you … move in with me?" Bette asked haltingly.
Jodi immediately became serious. "I don’t see that happening."
Bette bit her lip, not trying to hide her hurt. "Because you don’t want to lose your precious autonomy. Y’know, for all your talk about my control issues, you’re the one who doesn’t like to take risks."
Jodi sighed wearily; she stood up and started to gather her papers. Bette stamped on the floor to get her attention; she turned around, exasperated.
"What?"
"I’m tired of living in a constant state of fear with you! I’m the one putting herself out there!"
She signed back angrily. "I didn’t even want to be in a relationship! I’m happy now. Isn’t that enough? Why are you looking ten years in the future?"
Bette glared at the ceiling, her jaw clenched in anger. Jodi waited until they both calmed down, then signed carefully.
"Let me ask you something and be honest: when you’re alone, who do you think of? Do you really even see us a year from now, let alone ten?"
Bette turned back to her, stunned. As they stared at one another, a growing comprehension became apparent to both of them. Jodi looked away, not really surprised or disappointed. Having gotten her answer, she headed for the front door; she stopped in the doorway and spoke over her shoulder.
"This is the reason why I don’t like kids. Tell Angie goodbye for me."
The door closed quietly behind her. Bette took a shaky breath and looked around the empty house. She suddenly realized that she actually felt relieved, amazed she was still standing. If it was Tina who had left, I’d be in fucking pieces.
I don’t think Bette was entirely successful in never letting Tina see “that” side of her. The inconsiderate part, that is. I hope Tina always saw that she was “the one”, though. I’m longing for part 10, but at the same time, I’m dreading it, cos I really don’t want this to end. Thanks for the post, LM.
the flashbacks are so incredible!! :)
I love this it shows the beginning the middle and hopefully a beautiful ending. Alice and Bette were broken up before Tina came on the scence. She was with Gabby. In the jail Bette told candace she hadn’t smoke since she was twelve. In another she told Shane and Jenny she had stop 4 yrs ago. The is just a movie with different writer,if you want her to smoke this is your story. All I want is for Bette nd Tina together as a family. thanks
Fantastic chapter LM! The flow of your present and past are getting better with each post. Awaiting your next update. Thanks.
Unfortunately, I don’t think Jodi on TLW will go so quietly into the night as your Jodi. PPS.
As excited as I am to see your posts, I am not looking forward to the next chapter ending it all. Every chapter has been exceptional. Thanks for such a wonderful read!
“She has this innate sweetness … And it’s not naiveté: it’s a lack of guile.” – good line!
Loved the real time and flashbacks of Bette and Tina. They have done a lot with and to each other. Now it is time to start a different road but with the same two, now three people.
no way can you end this incredible story on us…I love how you are writing it and we need more than 10 chapters
I am looking forward to where you take us next, but at the same time sad as it will be the final installment in this series. You are writing this so amazingly and I am addicted.
You almost gave me a heart attack.:) What if Jodi had said ‘yes’ to moving in? Interesting about Alice telling Bette to not show Tina parts of herself. Wonder if that is a reason she always had to treat Tina so ‘gingerly’? Can’t wait for tomorrow.
