Love Is A Fragile Thing 25

‘I’m so tired, so tired,’ she says to herself while she allows the sweat to drip off the side of her face and gets ready for the next serve from her opponent, Jackie Schumacher.

Schumacher, rank 11 in the world, has been playing at the top of her game at this invitation. Actually they both have, how do you expect they both made it the finals? Jackie gets ready, the ball in her left hand, the racket in her right, and then she serves. Dana smacks the ball back and her opponent rushes to the other side of the court to hit the ball right back and Dana is unable to get it.

“Fairbanks is looking pretty tired out there.”

“She sure does George. If she continues to play like that, I’m not sure if she’ll be able to win this.”

“I agree Ann, Schumacher is not letting up. People have been saying this is a ‘David & Goliath’ rematch.”

“I don’t know about that, but if that’s the case we are just going to have to wait and see if David can actually win this time.”

    UP IN THE STANDS

    “Mommy?”

    “Yes, sweetie?”

    “Auntie Dana looks really tired.”

    “I know.”

    “Is she losing?”

    “Not quite.”

The girls continue watching the match, but Tina couldn’t help looking over at the vacant seat next to Bette. She was curious and deep down she could feel that small twinge of jealousy, thinking that seat was saved for a surprise special someone in her life. Tina wasn’t the only one with curiosity

    Kelly whispers in her ear

    “Babe?”

    “Yeah?”

    “Is Bette seeing someone?”

    “I don’t know.”

“Well who is that seat for?”

“I don’t know,” she said with a little annoyance in her voice.

    THE ROW RIGHT BELOW THEM

Shane was watching the match and whispers to Missy.

    “Hey Miss.”

    “Yeah.”

    “Is Bette seeing anyone?”

“No, if you’re talking about that empty seat she just said it was for a friend. Why?”

    “Just asking.”
