A wave crashed upon the shore, dragging sand back into the ocean with it as it retreated. Maxine watched as various shells and pieces of seaweed were deposited on the shore as the wave crashed again, smoothing out the surface of the sand. It was cyclical, mesmerizing, and suddenly Maxine smiled slightly at the irony of the situation.
"That wave reminds me of my life," she said in a tone just above a whisper. In fact, Bette had to turn her focus away from the ocean to make out Maxine’s words.
"How is that?"
"All that energy." Maxine pointed as the wave began to build back up and progress toward the shore. "It builds up until it cannot be contained anymore, and then crashes down on another, the shore. But when it leaves, other than the few things the ocean has churned up, it leaves almost no mark that it had even disturbed the sand."
"Interesting analogy," Bette said sarcastically. "Let me guess, you’re the water and I’m the sand."
"In a way," Maxine said thoughtfully as she turned and faced Bette. "But I would say that I left a mark on you more than the water will ever mark the sand."
"They’re permanent," Bette announced. "Just like where the wave hits the shore, it’s always wet. I’ll always feel like you abandoned me."
Maxine was shocked by Bette’s openness in the dialog between them. She hadn’t expected such candor from Bette, but decided that it was a better alternative than Bette shutting down.
"The same marks that are on you, Elizabeth, I live my life with as well." Maxine leaned forward in her chair, making marks in the sand as she felt it travel through her toes. "When I met Melvin, I was much like that wave then too. I was so excited to be part of his life, part of anything that he did." Maxine sighed as she looked over and met Bette’s gaze. "I was even more excited when I found out that I was pregnant."
Bette remembered how excited she had been when Tina told her that she was pregnant for the first time. The elaborate set-up Tina had gone through to share the news, interrupted by Bette’s rant. She frowned remembering her poor behavior.

Beautiful! Powerful! Poignant! I love how you demonstrate the struggle for forgiveness in one’s life. We see in Bette v Maxine. But, we also see the results of forgiveness in Bette + Tina’s relationship. What a wonderful comparison. I love how thoughtful you are writing this story. May it truly be redemptive. Thanks Gumby!

So great to see another chapter of this wonderful story. Hopefully Bette will, after listening to Tina and Alice, give her mother another chance to explain what has been going on with her life and why she was not able to be in her life while Melvin was alive. And the fact that he lied all those years about everything. Bette needs to know these things and I hope she will allow her mother to talk with her and to become the mother and friend she and Tina needs and the grandmother that Angelica needs in their lives. The comparisons were awesome and so true. Fantastic chapter. Thanks for posting.

Hey Gumby, Welcome back. I have so missed your words and wisdom. This was a touching and sad chapter. As Bette and Maxine started to talk through their difficult past and begin to build a relationship. I do hope that Bette sticks with it and allows her mom to explain everything. Then Bette’s eavesdropping on Tina and Alice’s conversation was intense and brought back many of the emotions Bette has tired to surpress. It was so tender that Tina just held her and allowed her to unravel. I can’t wait to read more. Many thanks from Your Loyal Fan.
