    Love’s Recovery

"Maybe if I would have heard the entire story," Bette tried to defend what she knew was incorrect.  "He obviously lied and that’s not something I could have ignored."

"So you would have stood up to Melvin?" Maxine raised her eyebrow to challenge Bette.  "Just as you stood up to him when he refused to acknowledge your child as his grandchild when Tina was pregnant?  Kit told me even she tried to reason with him over that one.  Tina is the love of your life and you wouldn’t stand up to him until you had lost her and he was dying."

"You don’t know shit about my relationship with Tina."  Bette got up and started to walk away.

"I know that you love her more than anything!"  Maxine called out, stopping Bette in her tracks.  She didn’t dare approach her, only with her words did she reach out.  "I know that when Tina talks about you her entire demeanor changes and she has a sense of peace I’ve never known anyone to have.  I know that she wants you to be happy."

"I was!" Bette turned around angry, facing Maxine once more.  "I was living my life having buried both of my parents and not being able to provide Angelica with a grandparent.  You had to come into my life for some godforsaken reason to fuck it all up, Maxine!"

"Your father made a mistake," Maxine’s soft tone shocked Bette; it was void of any animosity toward Melvin.  "He made a mistake in lying to you, in not accepting Tina into your life and rejecting your son.  But, when he needed you the most, you moved him into your home to take care of him around the clock and put what was most important to you at the time, your career, on hold."

"I made a mistake letting my career be more important than Tina."

"And she forgave you," Maxine pointed out.  "I’m just asking for forgiveness for my part in following your life from afar instead of being honest.  I’m sorry for being fearful and not honest in my love for you, Bette."

Bette fought to keep her tears at bay, clearly losing the battle when she acquiesced and wiped her eyes before the tears fell down her cheeks.

    1. Beautiful! Powerful! Poignant! I love how you demonstrate the struggle for forgiveness in one’s life. We see in Bette v Maxine. But, we also see the results of forgiveness in Bette + Tina’s relationship. What a wonderful comparison. I love how thoughtful you are writing this story. May it truly be redemptive. Thanks Gumby!

    2. Thank you for coming back to this story. Getting to the point where you can forgive someone is sometimes a giant struggle. But, if you can get there, it is one of the greatest gifts you can give. I hope Bette can find her way! PPS

    3. very emotional ending…it’s nice to see how B&T relationship had grown and how much feeling they have for each other..can’t wait to see where you will take this story

    4. So great that you´re back with this amazing story. The comparison between Bette and Tina´s past and the presence of Bette and Maxine´s was beautiful. Thank you.

    5. So great to see another chapter of this wonderful story. Hopefully Bette will, after listening to Tina and Alice, give her mother another chance to explain what has been going on with her life and why she was not able to be in her life while Melvin was alive. And the fact that he lied all those years about everything. Bette needs to know these things and I hope she will allow her mother to talk with her and to become the mother and friend she and Tina needs and the grandmother that Angelica needs in their lives. The comparisons were awesome and so true. Fantastic chapter. Thanks for posting.

    6. Hey Gumby, Welcome back. I have so missed your words and wisdom. This was a touching and sad chapter. As Bette and Maxine started to talk through their difficult past and begin to build a relationship. I do hope that Bette sticks with it and allows her mom to explain everything. Then Bette’s eavesdropping on Tina and Alice’s conversation was intense and brought back many of the emotions Bette has tired to surpress. It was so tender that Tina just held her and allowed her to unravel. I can’t wait to read more. Many thanks from Your Loyal Fan.
