Mi Casa Es Su Casa. Chapter 4.

“Mr. Riccio, I obviously need a TV and you and Billy have been very helpful”

    “Thank you, Ms. Porter.”

    “May I come by tomorrow?’

    “Certainly.”

Bette started to clean up the mess she had made, but the store manager stopped her, telling her that they would take care of it.

As Bette exited, she saw a display of VHS tapes.  It hit her that they should tape the program.  She grabbed a set of tapes, and $20 from her bag, and called out as she waved the tapes and the money, “Mr. Riccio, I’m buying these too.”  She then handed the $20 to the security guard and rushed to join Tina.

Billy certainly knew his TV sets, and the new set was already in place when Bette arrived, and Billy was quickly setting the stations.  ABC appeared on the screen, and Tina sighed loudly.  Bette sighed too, though less loudly.

Billy admired his work, “The parking lot has great reception!”

    Bette asked, “Reception?”

“The set uses an antenna.  It’s getting a good signal from here.”

Bette nodded and glanced at Tina, who was completely focused on the TV screen.  Bette smiled at Billy.

“Thank you so much.  You are a lifesaver.”

She handed him $20, which he accepted, “Anytime,” and he headed back into the store.

Bette glanced into the car and saw that the TV set was set up on the passenger side.  She watched the screen and saw the famous TV host onscreen.  She had finished reciting her guests on the special, and went on to announce her first guest, a chart-topping country singer whose name was unfamiliar to Bette.

Tina looked up at Bette, “Let’s get to your house.”

“T, Billy said the reception was good here.  We don’t know if we will be that lucky if we go somewhere else.”

Tina nodded and Bette got into the backseat behind Tina.

As Billy, Mr. Riccio, the security guard each left the store that night, each chuckled at the sight of the two women sitting the car watching their new television.  Mr. Riccio briefly considered waiting until the show was over, just in case they needed any help, but good sense prevailed and he left for home.

The second segment was with the author of a series of best-selling inspirational books.  Bette went to a pizza place in the strip mall and brought back a slice for each of them.

    “Pineapple, Babe?”

“I’ve never tried it with pineapple.”

Bette remembered the tapes just in time, and slipped the tape into the TV as the segment with Alphaville’s new star began.”

Several hours later, after they had reheated and eaten the fajitas, cleaned up their mess, and undressed for bed, Tina laid on her back with Bette on her side at her side.  Tina could tell that Bette was preparing to say something, but Bette was taking so long that Tina grew impatient.

    “What?”

Bette frowned, once again smoked out by Tina.  She sighed and whined, “I am not a cultural elitist.”

“Yes you are, Babe, but the nicest possible kind.”

The next afternoon, true to her word, one honorable vendor to another, Bette returned to the store and purchased their best television, a DVD player as well as a VCR, and a satellite system that she had them install at an inconspicuous spot.

    1. That was so great! I asked my little sister (who notices/hears/sees everything better than I do, even though she had to be cajoled (read:threatened) into watching the show) not even a fortnight ago if she’d ever seen a tv in Bette&Tina’s living room and she said no. I just assumed Bette had put her foot down about that, and was yeah, something of a “cultural elitist” about it all… (they do exist! C’mon, we all know at least *one*, who’s above the whole tv thing.) but I wondered how a movie exec like Tina lived without the tube… I see she probably couldn’t! I love how Bette charmed the guys in the store, and Tina’s single-mindedness re: the Baba Wawa show. I’m waiting to see what you have in store for the final installment. Thanks for the post Spumoni, I really enjoyed it. Cheers!

    2. C U T E!! A D O R A B L E!! TiBette are just too good together! Thanks for wonderfully filling in the blanks. I love it! The whole TeeVee thing was Hilarious. LOL. Please continue. Its Very Enjoyable! :)

    3. Spumoni don’t feel that you are the only one that has not learned those lessons, most of the time I forget that I once learned them. Great chapter and I love an alpha woman and a woman of action. they proved both of those attributes with this chapter. PPS

    4. Excellent!!! It made me think of, and this is really said as a compliment, one of Jobadge’s situations… Very funny and clever chapter! It sounds like a real life story… Has something like this ever happened to you? I just loved how Bette handled the whole thing… Always the smart one, and Tina’s savior, but that’s a given! Very nice chapter. And you’re right, even though I can totally understand it, it always strikes me when I go to someone’s place and they don’t have a TV. And like Tina, I always think it might be in a cupboard somewhere…

    5. LMAO!!! This was a funny chapter. Now that I think about it, I don’t remember them ever showing a TV on the show. Surely, Tina being a movie exec, would need a tube somewhere in the house. Great post!!! PPS

    6. this was hilarious and this is so true, there’s no TV in B&T’s house LOL thank you, this was so refreshing…(and yes, it’s moi and i enjoy bringing B&T news to the fans, thank you)

    7. That was hilarious. Bette would not do real well in most homes in the US. I laught when Bette was trying to take the tv out of the box. The way things are boxed now a days, it would take more time trying to get it out then it would to set it up.

    8. I loved that. Thx for poiting out the alphaness of Ms Kennard b4 she left being Head of Development. No wonder she went under playing the housewifey role. She really can multitask and being the stay at home little woman clearly did not suit her…which also explains her exasperation when Bette refused to take the citibank or any other job. Tina just did what a mother has to do, she compromised with the pump, got out there and paid the mortgage. Plus I never noticed the whole wearing the same clothes at the opening and the dinner; somehow they merged as the one event in my head. OMG I best go watch the whole series again. In fact s3 is playing here and that was so unbearable that I’m not watching just taping it, I’m a sook when it comes to pain. Thx for the shout out about HERE I AM. I wish I could be more disciplined with my writing like some people on the site. Oh yeah I have a friend who is a ‘cultural elitist’ with less right to be than Bette; She cracks me up, for 5 years I have been on at her to get a microwave but no!! Then she persuads me to go to MacDonalds for ‘Pancake Delight’ breakfast and I cracked up laughing so loud because of course they zap the pancakes in a microwave. Some people are so precious and so blind. I think Bette was quite a bit like that thru’out the series. God I hope she changes in s5. I find Tina so much more down to earth, so naturally flawed that I can see where she comes from most of the time whereas Bette as much as I love her I want to shout ‘F…wake up!!!!’…PPS

    9. what is ‘corn pudding’ and do u have a recipe. Corn is grown where I live and we have a pudding with corn but don’t know if anyone else would like it. It’s an acquired taste but I’m up for trying something different.

    10. Bette and the missing TV, I always thought that it would be in a cabinet in her living room, but in the otherhand I could see Bette not really bothering with one as I see her more as a reading person not someone who would sit in front of a TV. Tina , its part of her job description and I think a large percentage of her working day and her own time would be sitting in front of the google box. Corn pudding had to google this to see what it was reminds me of rice pudding, comfort food. You gave a shout out to Mrs Williamson remember her from way back in your stories. Love these fill in chapters. Thank you.
