    “Shane’s on line one.”

“Thanks James.” Bette quickly picked up the phone, a smile already forming.

“I hope you’re not calling to ask me if I’ll be there tonight,” she teased.

One of her closest friends let out a soft, sexy chuckle. “Wow…busted before I can even say hello. That’s got to be a record.”

Bette joined Shane in her laughter. “Shane, when was the last time I missed one of your openings?”

    “Uh….”

“Exactly! In all the years we’ve known each other, there was only one time…one. And if Daddy hadn’t fallen down the stairs and broken his leg I would have a perfect record.”

“All right, all right,” Shane purred into the phone with her low alto voice. “I can’t help it. You’re one of my best friends, and when I’m opening a show for the first time I always feel better when I know you’re in the room.”

“What a sweet thing to say,” Bette said, touched by the sincerely in Shane’s voice.

“Besides,” Shane added. “I really think you will like some of the pieces we’re showing tonight. Leigh Ostin has some absolutely stunning glass sculptures that would be perfect for your foyer or living room.”

Bette burst out laughing. “So, this call is not so much a personal request to see me, but a professional call from my favorite art curator…is that it?” she teased, the camaraderie between the two women apparent
by the ease of their banter.

“Geez Bette…busted twice in one phone call.” Shane shared in her friend’s laughter. “We’ve known each other way too long.”

“And I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.” Bette responded with affection. “I’ve got to go for now, but I’ll see you later, okay.”

“I’m counting on it,” Shane responded. “Go…fight for our families. I’ll see you tonight.”

“Always,” Bette whispered as she hung up the phone.  Sitting back in her chair she stared out the window of her office, letting Shane’s parting words wash over her. Fighting for gay and lesbian families is something she had been doing since almost the beginning of her career. After first attending Yale, she graduated from Harvard law school, and then moved to LA following a visit with one of her college roommates, Shane McClutheon. She’d fallen in love with the weather and the easy going lifestyle of the West Coast, which was in total contrast to how she was raised in the East. She breathed it in and rejoiced in the freedom she felt.
