The New Year’s Resolution That Changed My Life!

“What happened to you Porter? Did you finally fall off your Choos?” Alice laughed at her joke as she watched her friend hobble across The Planet on crutches.

“Thanks for your compassionate concern Alice,” Bette responded dryly as she plopped into a chair with as much dignity as possible.

Alice shrugged her shoulders, giving Bette a lopsided smile. “I’m concerned; I just show it differently than most.”

Knowing Alice was right, Bette reached out gave her friend’s hand a gentle squeeze. “I know Al…thanks.”

“So….” Alice gestured for Bette to explain what had happened.

“So…” Bette responded shrugging her shoulder casually. “I made a New Year’s resolution and it changed my life.”

“A New Year’s resolu…” Alice scoffed. “Since when do you do something as pedestrian as making a New Year’s resolution?”

“Geez Al, conceited much?” Bette said, furrowing her brow. “New Year’s resolutions are anything BUT pedestrian.”

“Whatever,” Alice waved her hand dismissing the statement. “So…” she repeated, pointing at Bette’s bandaged foot. “Tell.”

    “Well….” Bette started.

    48 hours earlier…

Looking at the seemingly endless tasks on her ‘must do’ list, Bette felt her chest tighten. Leaning back in her leather office chair she inhaled deeply then slowly released the air in hopes it would bring at least some respite from the stress that had become a constant part of her work day.

It was the beginning of a new year, and with that came all the expectations of where she wanted to take her gallery in the next twelve months. And, along with those expectations came stress…stress that took more and more out of her with each passing year.

Bette finally threw down her pen. This is not how she wanted to live her life. When she dreamed of owning her own art gallery it was her passion for the art and the artist that excited her. And, it was her natural
strong desire to succeed that kept her working towards her goals. However, at no time did she ever think she would trade her passions and desires for this self-imposed stress. Yet, here she sat surrounded by art that was both moving and inspiring; by the work of artists she wanted to help succeed, unable to truly enjoy any of it because all she could see was the endless tasks listed out on a piece of paper.
