    Mom and Alice Ch 5

“So Dana got us really good seats. She says they are right down front.” Alice said.

“Tell me again why we are going.” Bette said.

“We are going to be supportive of a new friend.” Alice said.

“That’s right and I really want to go. I have never been to see a tennis game before.” Jess said leaning on her elbows while Bette tied the last shoe.

“Match. You have never been to a Tennis Match before.” Bette said.

“That’s what I said.” Jess answered with attitude.

“Keep that up and you won’t be going anywhere.” Bette said referring to Jess’s attitude.

    “Sorry.” Jess said.

“All right let’s go.” Alice said.

“Okay Jess go grab your hat.” Bette said.

“Yes Ma’am.” Jess said and disappeared into the bedroom.

“What’s up?” Alice asked sensing that their was something wrong with Bette.

    “What?” Bette said.

“Come on Porter what’s up?” Alice said.

    “It’s nothing.” Bette said.

“Come on what?” Alice said holding Bette’s arm as she tried to walk by.

Bette stopped and looked at her.

“Are you sure your reason’s for wanting to go to the match are purely platonic?” Bette asked.

“Bette.” Alice pulled her close to her and wrapped her arms around her. “I am absolutely positive. Dana is stuck so far in the closet, even though she isn’t ready to admit it, it will be years before she is ready come out. And even then it will be what did you say platonic.” Alice said kissing Bette.

Jess stood in the room smiling.

“Kid in the room.” She said after a minute with a huge grin on her face.

“How long have you been there?” Alice asked.

“Not long. Can we go?” Jess asked walking to the door.

    “Yeah.” Alice said.

They walked out to the car. Jess climbed in the back seat of Bette’s red beamer convertible.

“Mommy can we put the top down?” Jess asked.

“Is that okay with you?” Bette asked Alice.

“Are you kidding I love to ride with the wind blowing through my hair.” Alice said. Bette put the top down and pulled out of the driveway.
